How Does Sound Travel Through Air Questions asked

Resolved Question: TEENS: Rate my writing please? (1-10) :P?

ARIA MONTAK GLANCED DOWN AT THE SEER‘S HANDS, which were calloused and leathery around her own, before meeting his light, silver eyes. “What do you see?” She asked quietly. “Ninca. Nothing.” The man stared vacantly back at her, his scarred mouth turned down into a frown. “Your future is unclear to me, Montak child.” He shook his head slightly and pulled his hands away, burying them into the pockets of his grey cloak. The chamber in which they were seated was small, despite her expectations, and dim. Moonlight shone through a small, rectangular window, casting sheer shadows over their faces and making it seem as if she were in a dream. “It is not yet decided.” Aria knitted her eyebrows together, shivering slightly, only partly because of the chilled air enveloping her body. “What do you mean?” “I cannot see what your future holds, Montak.” The Seer tapped his lean fingers on the round, ice table that was placed between them and two glass chalices appeared, each carrying a steaming, sky-blue liquid. “Do you care for some Sea Tea?” he asked, already passing her a cup. She nodded and took a grateful sip; It was colder in this small chamber than it had been in the main temple. Aria had always wanted to try her element’s tea, it was supposedly a delicacy just as Hotspring Tea was to the Fire Realm, or Evergreen Tea was to the Forest Realm. Immediately, she knew why it was called Sea Tea. The taste of the ocean, mixed with the sweet sap of a Willa tree, engulfed her like a tide, swimming warmly around the insides of her body. She set the chalice down before her, the delicious scent stirring heavily in the air, and murmured a tired “Thank you.” Three days worth of travelling without sleep was finally beginning to take its toll. Wiping her hands on her cloak, Aria got back to business. “I wanted to know if my father will get better.” She said, leaning closer so her stomach hit the edge of the table. “You see, my father. He is the chief of the Iniuak Water Tribe, and he is extremely ill.” She hesitated for a moment, unsure if she even wanted to hear the answer. “Will he return to good health?” The Seer tilted his head up towards the ceiling, and Aria did, too. Her mouth dropped open; how had she not noticed it before? A vast circle was engraved in the ceiling, two lines crossed in the centre, the vertical line curved. Where the lines met, a large star was carved. She noticed that at the end of each line, slightly smaller stars were engraved, so there were five stars in all. Aria watched as the Seer closed his eyes and raised his palms towards the shapes. The circle began glowing silver, and spinning madly, before erupting in a fury of black flames. She shrank back; fire in the Water Realm? The unlit torches decorating the walls ignited in an indigo blaze. The flames grew taller, reaching towards the engraved rune just as the Seer did, and connected with the black flames. A sound, like the cracking of a leather stone whip, occurred and the room was suddenly being bathed in a vibrant white light. Aria winced at the sudden brightness as the Seer began chanting under his breath. She knew what he was saying, the elders of her village had taught her when she was a seventh year; it was a basic spirit call, but no one could master it like The Seer: ‘let me see’. “Lil mur selk, lil mur selk, lil mur selk.” His voice ascended louder until he was bellowing. Their chalices of Sea Tea rattled on the ice table and Aria’s sapphire eyes were wide. “Lil mur selk, lil mur selk, lil mur selk!” Then, he became quiet, his cloaked arms falling down into his lap. The circle above them screeched to a halt and the black and indigo flames were gone, with absolutely no indication that they were there in the first place. His silver eyes opened and matched Aria’s, only they were no longer silver. They were no color at all. They were white. Her heart flew upwards, vibrating against the confines of her throat. When he spoke, he spoke so quietly, so calmly, that Aria supposed she was mistaken. He spoke as if nothing had happened. “I see death.” He said, reaching over the table and bracketing her face with his frozen palms. “Farewell, Princess Montak.” An odd feeling overcame her, and her eyes shut. That’s when she saw it, as if looking through a grimy piece of sea glass, unclear and fuzzy. Her death. more

Resolved Question: Should subwoofers be banned in apartment buildings and condos?

Even when the rest of the music is at relatively low volume, low frequency bass (esp. 80Hz and below) travels easily through walls and manifests itself as a serious annoyance far from the source. It's like someone constantly bouncing a beachball or basketball against the wall, which would be treated as an obvious act of belligerence. Remote terrorism via sound pressure has become a chronic nuisance in dwellings with shared walls, especially walls with no air-gap between them, or non-cement structures. The problem with obnoxious car subwoofers is well known, but home subwoofers are worse in many ways because they are stationary and far less intermittent. They can be insidious, with just enough volume to annoy people from chronic exposure (like living near wind turbines). I had to move because a landlord wouldn't control tenants who forced their bass into other units for hours on end, knowing full well it was bothering people. You could rarely hear the midrange and highs, just a constant thumping. With the prevalence of thug culture in today's society (even among the middle class), and too many people who only understand RESPECT in a jail-house/street-life context, is it reasonable to ban subwoofers in apartments or condominiums? At the very least, how about limiting their size and/or maximum SPL, or having managers ensure they are isolated as much as possible from the floor. You can use headphones, and they now have ones that replicate movie surround sound. Courteous people ought to realize that you don't have the same rights in an apartment as you do in a standalone house. The answer from "lowertheboom" is ironic, seeing as that's the exact name of an anti-subwoofer website! It the reply isn't sarcasm, he seems to have ignored all the moral reasons why it's NOT cool to inflict bass (even at "low" levels) on one's neighbors. The whole point of my question is to make people think about The Commons, not just their own entertainment. If anyone has a more intelligent, thorough reply, please have at it. more

Resolved Question: how does it does it sound..for a first page of a BOOK?

As I hurriedly stuffed in more articles into my handbag, I took a quick glance at the clock hung over my bed where my luggage lay, some packed, and few yet to go. It was 8pm and the flight was scheduled for 12am.If all was to go right, I had to be at the airport 3hours prior to boarding (as per international airline rules) and here I was still stuck at home with a 1001 things running at the back of my mind , my mother constantly giving me tips, guidelines , a list of what to do and what not and across the hall, stood my dad, who gave a serious look at me, screaming silently about my undisciplined character and the unnecessary delayed being caused thereby. Fifteen minutes later, the luggage was loaded in the boot, and my family of four- my parents, and my younger brother , seated themselves in the car. It was a 45 minute drive to the airport, situated away from the main city. Initially, there was an unusual silence in the car, the English FM playing some light music and the RJ entertaining us to some jokes but soon enough it was mom, who enlightened the atmosphere back with her list of tips, guidelines etc. in midst of all the hush-a-hush dad dedicated all his concentration to driving but occasionally gave ears to mom’s lecture and passes on a smirk behind to me. We reached at the airport where I was joined by my best friend , a companion for the next few days who had arrived at the airport few minutes before us. I greeted her with a warm teddy bear hug to make up for the time I’d kept her waiting. All of us moved inside , which never seemed calm and composed even at this time of the day on a regular weekday. Passengers busy with the airport formalities, the officials storming from one side to another in case of passenger emergencies, and not to forget the well dressed, smart cabin crew that pass by us every time a flight departure is announced. No wonder, the Dubai International Airport, situated in the United Arab Emirates is ranked as one of the busiest airports on planet Earth. Both of us cleared all the airport travel procedures, got hold of our boarding passes issued by the handsome lean official at the Airline ticket counter. Moving towards are respective families , which had now engaged in a conversation in our absence, we passed on huge hugs to them , bid them goodbyes, not to escape the hideous tears from both our mothers, that created an air of nostalgia. A final wave, and we passed through our immigration procedures, final security check and zoomed into the duty free shop. We did an hour of window shopping and finally I picked up some Swiss chocolates, that were always my favourites, while my friend picked up a novel ‘The Last Lear’ . Terminal 3 awaited our presence to clear out few last min checks, and after which we were guided into the airport bus, to take us to our plane, that stood as majestic even in the dim hours of night , all set to greet its passengers . My friend stepped in first , followed by me and sat in our respective seats, that were adjacent to each other. Although , I was a great fan of window seats in airplanes, I happily allowed my friend to take it, maybe because I had loads of beautiful things that I was already imagining and thinking, that were way above the happiness I receive sitting next to the window . The plane was half empty imparting comfort of its own, creating a peaceful and calm ambience , which was quite an unusual scene on the contrary. We were greeted by refreshments by the air hostess and now, who was the sight of our eyes as both of us couldn’t distract ourselves off the lady’s beauty or rather make up. It still wonders me! Now Followed by the pilot’s welcome note , it now signaled us that we were to fly any moment from now. We performed a silent prayer to seek in God’s blessings and our loved one’s wishes before embarking this journey as in to remove or atleast subsidise that little fear embedded deep inside because of the recent air crashes, making one wonder about the safety about air travel. Deep above in the head , were a lot of doubts, and questions and deep within the heart I was excited about finally living my dream as a child, waiting to smell the air , touch the indigenous soil, soothen the eyes to see exotic nature, encounter cultures and traditions and a lot unseen, untold, eagerly waiting for its two little princesses to enter its royal territory and discover. It all seemed, paying homage to the beautiful land as humble devotees. Seatbelts-TIGHTENED , cell phones-SWITCHED OFF, windows-RISEN, engine-ROARING and wings-ALL SET TO FLY! Yes, me and my friend had boarded flight EK234 at 11pm on the first weekday of the month of July to embark a beautiful, exotic, exciting maiden journey to incredible INDIA, as travelers never before. more

Resolved Question: Does this sound like an interesting plot to you?

I came up with this plot based off of two dreams I had last month. It;s set in a made up world. Freyja de Baine wasn't a queen, but a prisoner. She was captured from her country at fifteen and brought to Rehmur, a cold, dark place in comparison. Her Glimmer*** sets her apart as a freak but she is made King Armaddon's third wife anyway. She lives in as much luxury as her husband provides for the first two months of their marriage but soon decides she is as much a queen as a prisoner. She is invited to King Armaddon's chambers one night, having been wed to him simply for the fertility. His first wife seemed to only produce daughters (she had seven already) and the other couldn't conceive no matter how hard they tried. The next month, it's obvious Freyja is pregnant. Distraught, she goes into town and buys a poison used to terminate pregnancies. She couldn't imagine making another human being suffer through the life she carried out. She hides the vile in the baths and the next evening after her wash she asks the slaves to leave her. They comply and she takes the poison while alone. But one of the slaves saw her and reported back to the king. Outraged, King Armaddon sends Freyja to the dungeons to be executed. While in the dungeons, she meets a pirate named Jourik who she makes fast friends with, no matter how hard she tries to isolate herself. When the day arrived for her execution, thieves broke into the dungeons, rescuing only two of its prisoners: Freyja and Jourik. Freyja tried to defend herself and put up a good fight before being knocked unconscious. She woke up in a bed some time later and realized she was on the ship. She went up to the main deck to see the ship belonged to the notorious pirate, Hellkin Highwater whose name came up in many conversations in Armaddon's court. Hellkin tells her they need her on their journey to the Edge of the World. when she asks why, he doesn't say and she is trapped on the boat without explanation. While there, though, her friendship with Jourik grows and she befriends a few of the other crew mates and a monkey named Moses. I haven't thought out the rest very thoroughly but she finds out her Glimmer is actually a power from the stars, who are the world's natural navigators, and she leads Hellkin through the strange waters "past the edge" to an amulet that gives limitless power. Unfortunately, Armaddon is also after this amulet. Along the way they meet sorceresses, monsters, and pirates who travel not by water, but by clouds. In the end, Freyja and Hellkin manage to steal the amulet and Hellkin reveals he's actually Soren, the brother Armaddon sold to pirates as a child. ***The Glimmer is a power that I dreamed about. It's basically useless and you can draw pictures in the air with this gold, glittery paint-like substance. You just simply have to wish it to appear and it will. But even though the Glimmer looks like sparkly paint, you can't grab it. It's more like a gas or an illusion. I'm sorry, that was pretty long but anyway, do you think it could make a good story. Would you read it? more

Resolved Question: Does the weather and density of the sky affect how loud planes sound?

This morning I could have sworn the UPS planes were landing in my living room and they normally don't sound that loud. It was very cloudy and a little stormy this morning. I know sound waves travel better through solids than air. Does the thicker sky affect the sound, or did they just change landing patterns because of the weather? more

Resolved Question: easy science question (hopefully)?

So I looked on the internet regarding a question of mine, (for a science project I need to do) "Does increasing the air pressure (by increasing the density by pumping more air into a confined space) increase the sound of speed?" I initially thought it did, because there were more "particles" (molecules) for sound to travel through. But when I had a quick read it said: "The air pressure and the air density are proportional to each other at the same temperature. The speed of sound in air depends on the density of air and the density of air depends on the temperature. Therefore the speed of sound is the same on a mountain peak as it is at sea level, provided that the temperature is the same." I thought by "pumping" more are into a confined space, it would increase the density (as there is more mass per unit volume) and atmospheric pressure (force per unit area exerted against a surface by the weight of air) as there would be more air therefore a larger mass and weight. But it says that the density of air relies upon the temperature and therefore the pressure (as pressure and density is proportional to each other if they're at the same temperature)... I'm kind of confused? Will someone please answer the following questions?: - Does increase the density increase the pressure (in regards to pumping more air into a limited space) as long as the temperature is the same? - It says that "the air pressure and the air density are proportional to each other at the same temperature"... how can the temperature of pressure and density in air change? - Does increasing the pressure and therefore density (or vise versa) increase the speed of sound? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Trigonometry in Music?

Engineering The sounds that we hear every day, including music, reach our ear as sound waves. These sound waves travel through the air at different angles from the original sound source. The sound then bounces off whatever is nearby, such as people or the walls of a concert hall. If a building is designed in such a way that the sound does not bounce back to the listener's ear well, then the music can be hard to hear or it can sound unbalanced. Engineers use trigonometry to figure out the angles of the sound waves and how to design a room or hall so that the waves bounce to the listener in a balanced and direct manner. Studio producers or hall managers sometimes install panels that hang from the ceiling of the room---these panels can be adjusted at specific angles to get the sound waves to bounce correctly. what are some specific examples of trig used for designing concert halls? more

Resolved Question: Another Science Guide help?!?!Please?

1.) Why doesn't sound travel through a vacuum? Sound is a waveform in matter, and there is no matter in a vacuum Vacuums absorb most of the sound It does travel in space, as verified on Star Trek 2.) How do you make sounds from your vocal chords? Vocal chords act like tiny loudspeakers, vibrating and forcing sound out your mouth Air from your lungs passes over the vibrating vocal chords, making sound It is a myth that your sound comes from vocal chords; it comes from your chest 3.) What happens when you blow across the top of a bottle? The top of the bottle gets cold, making a squeaking sound Air starts to circulate and vibrate in the bottle, making a sound You must blow into the bottle for anything to happen 4.) What would the beat frequency be if you added tones of 880 Hz and 882 Hz? 2 Hz 881 Hz 1762 HZ 5.) Why can’t you hear an echo from a curved wall? Not much sound reflects directly back to you The sound is diffracted Curved surfaces absorb the sound more

Resolved Question: How does this chapter sound?

This is the beginning of chapter 16 of my fantasy novel. By the way they are walking in single file on a road with walls of briars on each side of them. How can I make it better? The temperature wasn't as forgiving as the other day. The briars around them were so frozen that they would snap the minute they'd rubbed against it. In a way it was a good thing, not getting jabbed by the briars, but when they came across a thorn that was stiff and unbreakable, it would slice through their coat, producing unbearable pain, exposing their skin to the bitter air. Despite all the unfortunate conditions, there was no more stumbling over rocks. The terrain had finally diverged into Zoysia grass, which was smooth and soft. It prevented feet blisters, and made it so much easier to travel. Max kept his arms crossed as he marched toward the plumes of his own breath. His were heavy, and after every few minutes they would start to close, until a chilled breeze would shock him awake. He was in the back of the line, even Byron was five feet ahead. He peered into the distance, seeing nothing but more briars and endless road. With only winter clothes and his last potato, his backpack rested light on his shoulder's. He put his head down as he let his hopes rise by imagining a briar-free environment, a cozy bed, and a plate, covered with fresh fish fillet, served with juicy scallops. Up in front, frustration began to settle in. Sean couldn't stop glancing down at his map. He remembered back when he thought they were heading East, but soon found out that they were actually going West. He didn't want to make the same mistake twice, especially because there would be no hikers or rescuers within at least a hundred miles. He nodded, knowing that there was no mistake, the dock was one mile away, but that just made him more nervous. There was no sight of it anywhere, just the continuation of road and briars. Then he stopped and turned around, prepared to reveal the bad news. The four of them looked at them with a blank expression. “I, I,” he stuttered. He paused, and peeked back one more time, peering with all his eye strength... A smiled rose on his face. “There it is!” He shouted, jumping up and down. more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my *stories* so far....?

Untitled - 1 Preface I always feared one day I would see my life fall before my eyes, but this was worse by far. You couldn’t do anything but want to get this over with, just die before life could get any worse. Thus was unstoppable it’s like your whole future was set in front of you, like there was no point in making you’re life what you wanted it to be, everything was lost. The only thing I could do is lay, hoping for a miracle something so magical to make this stop. I was never a big fan of believing miracles, but that’s all I could do at this moment. Then I heard a soft sound drifting through the room, I knew what it was just the second I heard the first note. Chapter 1 Rome I opened my eyes into a sudden light, and then I heard a sudden voice. It said clearly, “Can I get you anything miss?” “No thanks” I replied a bit jittery. "Where am I?"I asked. "You’re on the Travel Air, you know that." She replied. "No" I said a little too sharply and apprehensive. "Hmm. Well your passport says you’re on your way to Rome, to visit your grandmother." She said. "Why" I asked puzzled, she searched for words. "I don't know," she said, and walked away. Was something wrong? That wasn’t on my mind right now, I was going to see my grandmother and for me I didn’t like planes, and the movies were old, boring romance movies with lots of characters. I sighed and new exactly why I was on my way to Rome was I really that clueless.I already knew that my mom would have died from cancer, and that my dad would’ve committed suicide after, and then they would send me here. It was still a shock. We arrived at her house. I forgot how magical her house was, a unicorn could be in her backyard, and snow white in the kitchen taking the first bite of the poisonous apple in her snow colored hands, scary even. We slowly pulled in the driveway, I opened my door and got out of the car. She gave me a hug, "Everything was going to go great," she said. "Thanks," I said. I walked through the old wooden doors. Inside was like going back into time.“It’s been a long time for you, hasn’t it?" She asked. "Yeah," I replied. She handed me a luggage bag. I walked slowly to my room and started to unpack my luggage, it was my usual shirt, jeans and sweats with a total of about 5 outfits all together. I tried to feel excited and open minded but sadness still rushed through me. But I would keep working on that. My room reminded me of the time I used to visit my grandma all the time and she would tell me stories about mystical creatures. It was nice to think about. I finished unpacking and got ready for bed. I wasn’t hungry; I ate on the plane. "Can I go to bed early?" I asked. "The plane ride was long.." I added. "Yes of course," she said. She gave me another hug. "Goodnight Anna," she said. "Goodnight," I replied. I climbed into bed and looked out the window at the moon. Maybe Rome wouldn't be that bad? Morning came fast; I threw on what was in sight then went to the kitchen for breakfast. My grandma was there watching a program on TV. "Can I go for a walk in the forest?" I asked. "Yes, but be careful," she warned. "I will," I replied. I ate a bowl of LIFE cereal, and then grabbed my coat. It was fairly warm outside, which was nice. I opened the gate to the backyard. The backyard was pretty, with a garden and the big forest in the background. I started out on the trail looking for something interesting to start my day. I kept walking farther and farther till I hit a dead end so, I started back and then fell to the air and mountains that made me feel like I was flying in a weird way, I opened my eyes slightly, watching my blood, stain the soft brown dirt a dark red, as I drifted away from conciseness. I only thought of the following; breaking my leg, just my crazy imagination or falling like I had done, and hurting myself in any other way. But either way I just wanted to go home. I wasn’t positive I would live through the pain of knowing everything was lost, but dying wasn’t hard it was simply a statement of truth, truth between everything life beholds. Waiting to die was worse than experiencing it itself. And before I could think I was drowned in darkness. ~~~ I awoke, in a dark room and heard sharp quick movements around me swirling me into dizziness in a matter of seconds. A needle plunged through my skin and pain over whelmed my veins. Untitled - Number 2. I awoke to a crashing voice in my ear. He laughed mockingly. "So you wanted some sleep, your not supposed to sleep!" He roared. "You know that’s against the rules," he snarled. If you do that again, I’ll make you kill her, "who?" I asked even though his mind would take over my thoughts in a matter of seconds. "Who, is that the best you can come up wiSorry the last part was cut off...I'm not sure to continue with it... i need to figure out plot. more

Resolved Question: Please help me with my book :)?

I want to write a book about a spy and these are the first 2 chapters.. please comment what you think about it... ( don't be kind just because I'm eleven... I need all the help I can get ) Thank you for taking your time to read the following.. 1. Sweet Dreams. In the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest many animals lurk in the trees and bushes waiting for food. I was suffering from serious hunger pains for 3 days now and it was not easy at all. Wondering about the forest not knowing where you’re going and nothing to protect you from the dangers ahead. I drank the last drop of water in desperation to keep me going. I didn’t know what I was looking for exactly, just something human. * * * I was starting to get tired and I was soaked through from sweat. How long have I been traveling now? 4 maybe 5 hours? I thought. Either way my legs were killing me and the sun was starting to set. Better set up camp then! I thought. I found some elephant leaves and branches, tied it together and finished it off with my sleeping bag inside. * * * I was awoken by rummaging in the bush near my tent. Curious, I went outside to find out what was causing the noises. I felt my stomach churn. My eyes met with a King Cobra. I was startled as it sniffed its surroundings with its tongue whilst baring it’s deathly fangs. Keep still! I thought. But I knew I couldn’t stay still for ever, I had to move fast, well, at least faster than the cobra. It was closing in on me, if I didn’t act now I would be cornered in my own tent. I jumped. I was amazed at how high I went. I was well above the snake and I was beginning my descent... I landed in an awkward way that I thought I broke my ankle. I landed in a soggy pool of mud. My reactions would be slower; I had to stay one step ahead. The snake was not going to give up and was already on it’s way. How long will it take for the venom to kill me? I thought. It takes what like 4 hours for the venom to kill an elephant. So how long will it take to kill me? The answer did not matter; I knew it would be quick. With all my strength I crawled backwards. I really had injured my ankle. It was getting ready to blind me with it’s irritating spit. Desperately I flailed my arms to grab on to something. My hand met with a branch and I whacked the cobra on its back the hardest I could. It lay there not moving a muscle. It was not brown and green anymore, it was red, red with blood. I backed away to a tree trunk to catch my breath. Gasping for air I tried to remain calm but that didn’t happen. Then on my shirt there was a drop of water or something. I looked up only to find a mother cheetah and 2 cubs. I didn’t have any energy left to run and even if I had any, I would never be able to outrun a cheetah. I was so scared, I couldn’t even scream. I had a feeling, a very sick feeling, that mummy was going to teach her cubs a little hunting lesson, with me as food. So this is it? I thought, I’ll die here without anyone at all knowing, no-one there to look down on me as I descend to my grave? It pounced. It’s teeth sank into my arm like a fork in a tender steak. I felt the pain rushing through me and I knew it was over. 2. Early mornings. BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP! Matt slammed down his fist down on the alarm clock and nearly broke it in the process. He had a cold shower to awaken his senses and got dressed for school. He walked downstairs to have breakfast and was met by his guardian, Lucy Harp. “Hello Lu!” he said “Have a good night’s sleep then, Matt?” “Not really, no. I had this weird nightmare, I was in the rainforest with snakes and cheetahs and stuff, I killed the snake but the cheetah got me,” he said. “Sounds very peaceful,” she joked. Lucy was from some place in California and came over to London for a better career but that didn’t entirely work out as Matt’s uncle, Jack, found her jobless at the library. He hired her as Matt’s caretaker, when Matt was only 5 years old, because John has to do a lot of business trips for the ‘Sales & Marketing.’ Lucy wanted to become a guardian for Matt to help John around in the house and with Matt as he doesn’t have any parents. “So what have you cooked for us this morning Lu?” asked Matt, “Some eggs, cereal, bacon -” “Scrambled eggs and toast,” she interrupted. “Thanks. When did Jack say he’d be back from Bangkok?” queried Matt. “He said around dinner time,” she replied. “Hope he makes it,” said Matt with a disappointed look on his face. “He’ll make it! He promised.” “Yeah, just like the other times.” * * * Geometry, Maths, English. A normal school day’s schedule. Matt was too excited about his uncle coming back from Bangkok after 1 week to worry about how the Vikings invaded Britain. “... The Vikings first invaded Britain in AD 793 and last invaded in 1066 when William the Conqueror became King of England after the Battle Of The Hastings ...” The minute hand of the school clock seemed to be taking a small doze. HURRY UP! Matt was on the v( it didn't fit the whole thing in so this is the rest ) HURRY UP! Matt was on the verge to grab it and throw it out the window when he heard the relaxing 3 o’clock home time bell. Summer holidays had just begun. * * * On Matt’s way to the car park, he caught up with Donna Smith. “Hey! Hey, Donna wait up!” “Yes, Matt?” she said. “Are you doing anything on Sunday? ‘Cause me and Lu are going to the Liverpool VS. Manchester game and I was just wondering if –” “I’m sorry, I can’t go. My dad is taking me to Spain for 2 weeks and after that we’re going to see my Nan in America for 6 days. I really wish I could come, Matt but really I can’t.” “It’s alright... I understand. Well see you later! Have fun in Spain.” And then she was gone. more

Resolved Question: Is my short story any good?

Here is a little short story I had to do for English Homework. I already posted the same story, but I mucked it up, and pasted the wrong bits. Again, please please be brutally honest! BTW, in case anyone gets technical, this is about an earthquake that never happened! Amongst the rubble. I was running faster than I thought I could possibly run, adrenaline pumping through my veins like I was on some kind of illegal steroid. My legs were moving by their own accord. My feet burned, my throat seared, my head ached, but I did not care. How could I? I was by no means fit, and I had never run this steadily, or this long before. I kept waiting for the moment when my over working lungs would finally pack in, from all the smoke, and filthy air I was greedily inhaling, but it did not come. I wouldn’t let it. I felt a foreign fire in my soul, which seemed to fuel my long exhausted engine. Hope was keeping me going. Hope, yes, but also terror. Terror of what I may find, or indeed, may never find, if I did not keep running. I would have been a lot easier to travel, had the buildings not all collapsed. Mounds and mounds of concrete, and the destroyed remains of the buildings that had stood there proudly, just hours a go, littered the streets, or what used to be the streets… Cries of agony and the unnerving sounds of slow, painful death were erupting from all sides of me. I didn’t dare look too long at anything. It was like a nightmare, only I couldn’t wake up. This was real life. This was actually happening. My whole world had been destroyed- literally. I wanted to lie down in a darkened room, and cry. But I could not. I had a job to do. The job did not have a ‘praising’ attached to it, nor money, nor anything. The reward, if I was to succeed, were two lives. Two lives of which I could not bring myself to live on, without. My mother’s strong voice, that had spoken only minutes before, rang louder in my head, than the warning sirens that were still screaming-pointlessly, may I add. “Dehlahi. Ya’ll got to go find them. Please Dehlahi, do it for your Father, do it for them, do it for me.” My mother was dead. My father was dead. My sisters were all I had left. It seemed as if I had been running for hours- long, painful, heartbreaking hours, but when I looked behind my shoulder, I wanted to slap myself. I was only four small streets away from where I had begun my ‘epic journey’. I needed to get all the way to the other side of Portmore, (a beautiful- or what used to be a beautiful city in Jamaica,) and I felt as if I would never get there. If only the earthquake hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have had to dodge so much, and run whilst watching where my feet were going. Then again, if the freakin’ earthquake hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t be having to go anywhere in the first place. I turned blindly round a sharp corner, and thwacked painfully into someone. My elbows and knees flowed relentlessly with hot, sticky blood, and my forehead felt as if someone was carving symbols on it with a blunt razor. I looked up gingerly, bracing myself for the hard booted, well-aimed kick that was sure to be presented to me generously. To my surprise, a handsome, ivory faced, kind looking young man, held out his muscled arm, which was all but concealed by his khaki uniform, except for his leathery hands, and forearms. My face grew hot with embarrassment as I pulled myself up with it. I had never seen a white man in Portmore before, and I almost felt stupid as my sleeve rolled up, exposing my dark, unremarkable Jamaican complexion that evreyone here wore. He spoke in such an accent that I had only heard on my radio. His English was fluent and velvety, and I wanted very much to ask where he had come from, but I couldn’t find my voice. “I’m so sorry ma’am, are you quite hurt?” he asked, sounding genuinely concerned. His eyes were the brightest of blue, and seemed to sparkle in the non-existent sunlight. He was beautiful, but he almost frightened me. I had always been good at looking people straight in the eyes, but the shocking colour of his eyes made it hard. I was used to soft, deep brown. “Yes, Sir, I just didn’t see where I was going. I’ll go now Sir.” I took one last look into his glorious eyes, and turned to start running. I had completely forgotten about what I had to do, and I felt unbelievably awful. The people that I dearly loved could be dying, and here I was, gawking at some pretty white man. Ugh. I am beyond selfish. “Excuse me ma’am, I’m sorry, but you have to come with me. I am a Soldier from the British Army, and I have to gather every live person on this Island, and take you to a safety shelter, where the helicopters will land and take you all to the hospitals near about” He spoke in such a professional manner, that I couldn’t help but take him seriously. “But I can’t Sir! I have to find my sisters!” my voice sounded week, and frail, and annoyed me tremendously. “It’s orders ma’am. I’m sorry, but you have to come with me. The sooner you do, the sooner you’ll be out of this goddamn hell hole!” “I can’t Sir! I can’t! I have to go now! Take the little boy over there instead, he is dying, and is only a boy! Please!” My voice sounded pitiful, but he still listened. “Suit yourself ma’am, but try not to die. Stay safe” He said sadly, and quickly saluted to me, before sprinting over to the particular pile of rubble, where the little boy I had indicated, lay crying and groaning wordlessly, half berried in the muck. I turned on my heels and began running again, promising myself that I would not stop again, until I reached my sisters. The eerie evening transformed from the devastatingly beautiful peachy sky, to an ugly, dim light. Still, my worn, stinging feet plodded steadily on. If only I had thought to bring shoes- I guess I hadn’t known that there would have been any need for running trainers!I stopped at least four times, and I shamefacedly admit, that I had broken the promise to myself. But it was only at the expense of the poor people I saw on the way. One of the times I had to stop, I deliberately shooting an old woman with a gun that just lay on the street. She had been bleeding horrifically; there was no way she would have survived. I hated what I had done, but I had put her out of her misery. I ran quickly round yet another quirky bend, and with a gasp of joy, mixed in with sheer horror, I stopped running. This was the place where their childminder lived. Her flat was in what had used to be the cellar. I walked briskly forward, shaking as I assessed the awful situation. My sisters, even before the earthquake, had been below ground level. They were buried somewhere deep beneath all of the concrete and mess. They were almost definitely dead. And there was nothing I could do. I searched desperately around where I was standing, helplessly lookingor someone to come and help. Of course, there was nobody. They were all in the stupid shelters, waiting for the blessed helicopters. Just as I was about to start digging, a rustling had me spinning round to see where the noise had come from. Unable to believe what I was seeing, I simply stood there, my eyes filling with uncontrollable emotion. There, amongst the rubble, bloody faced, and so dirty she could plant potatoes on herself, sat my little sister, Nagali, only three years old. I marched over to where she sat, cross-legged, and touched her tenderly on her tiny, delicate shoulder. She did not look up; she simply carried on gazing at the little bundle in her arms, which, to my great relief, turned out to be my youngest sister, Roulei, only six months old. Unable to fight with words, I sat down next to her, and pulled her, and baby Roulei, onto my lap. I stroked Nagili’s filthy black braids, and gently caressed baby Roulei’s cheek. It was stone cold. Nagili turned round, herher beautiful, large chocolate brown eyes, wide and distraught, bore into mine. A single tear streamed down her face. more

Resolved Question: How does this sound to you? Good? Bad?

SOrry about the catergory. I could hear voices. Soft whispers, from a far away place. They weren’t mine, and they weren’t familiar. My eyes were closed, and I didn’t think I was able to open them. I had no strength. I had no power. I was useless. I felt like I was underwater, drowning. Something was choking me. It was painful. It gave me flashbacks . It gave me the terrifying memories of the unnoticeable amount of time I collapsed in the water, unable to take a breath, and the moment my body gave up on me. That was the day I became a spirit seeker. The voices seemed to get louder as they moved their way towards me. I wondered who they were. What did they want. I couldn’t make out what they were saying. It was all just a blur, with my mind traveling in circles, like it was flying threw the wind. The pain still kept gripping me, pulling me towards my death, but not quite strong enough to get me through the small space left to get there. I felt it when I opened my eyes. I felt the large sturdy hands, grabbing at my shoulders, pulling me towards it. I didn’t see it, though. Just like my mind, everything was a blur. The only word I recognized from the jumble was my name. Melody. My mother had named me that, not giving my father time to question. I remember her telling me what my name stood for. She said it stood for the soft music in our hearts, and the ringing in our ears. She said Melody was nothing like the music today, but only the music inside us. And with that, she had vanished in thin air. I was only seven. Nine, almost ten years had passed since then. I still couldn’t get over the soft drumming that she had permanently left in my mind. In my body. In my heart. I was starting to come back. It was even more painful than before, but I knew that the strength was working itself up inside me. I could feel the heat from the other persons breath on my neck, and I felt it trail down the back of my shirt and into the small of my back. I could feel the rough hands around me, one on my waist, and one on my shoulders. I could smell the air around me, the daisy that lingered in every breath. The rose that hung around my senses. I was starting to be able to see. I could see the rim of the pale blue t-shirt of the person, and I could see their neck as I was tucked into it. Most importantly, I could hear the voices around me, encouraging me to go further. “Come on, Melody. Wake up. Everything will be alright,” said a lone voice from above me. The hand clasped me harder, and I began to rock back in forth in the persons arms. I felt drops of water touch my cheek and trail down my nose, hitting the t-shirt with a thud that I seemed to hear, even though it seemed as if it were a mile away. “Is she going to be alright?” One of the other people asked “There would have to be a miracle for that to happen.” Said another. The person holding me still rocked back in forth, taking me with them. “Try turning her face out. Maybe she woke up.” Another said. Slowly, the rocking stopped, and within seconds I was laying on the ground, face up, staring towards the night sky. “Melody?” The one in the pale blue shirt asked, leaning his face so it was right above mine. I wondered who he was. What did he want, and how did it relate to what happened to me. There were tears waiting to spill out in his eyes as he started into mine, looking for hope, destiny. A miracle is what it would take to save me, the other one had said. But what was wrong with me? I felt alright, and I was sure I could get up… but it would take energy… a lot. “Melody, you have to show us some kind of signal. You have to be okay, Melody. You have to be okay!” He leaned down to press his head onto my chest, and my hands caught him halfway. I pushed his head so it was back where it was before, and made an effort. its a little long.... more

Resolved Question: Do you understand Special Relativity?

I understand the basics of what Special Relativity says, but I do not understand the hows and whys. Here are a few of my questions, If you know how to explain this, it would truly help me: 1.) Is light the only thing that's relative, or the only thing that's absolute? Does light only travel at the speed of light relative to something stationary, or always relative to everything? If it's the latter, than that means light moves outward from a speeding train at the speed of light from the train's perspective... so wouldn't that mean it moves at the speed of light plus the speed of the train to a stationary observer? 2.) I know light is comprised of moving magnetic and electric fields, and that is how light can travel in the almost perfect vacuum of space. But is light simply a propagating variation in a medium of some electromagnetic field that exists everywhere, like sound is a propagating variation in the medium of air, or is light actually bringing it's own medium with it so to speak? In other words, is light a variation in an existing electromagnetic field, or does light bring an electromagnetic field to where it goes? 3.) Is it correct to say that light does not need a medium, like sound does, to travel through because the medium that light travels through is spacetime itself? Is this why it's not possible to travel faster than light? 4.) What determines the speed of light? There is clearly something limiting how fast it can go, since the speed of light is finite and light cannot go faster? What is determining and limiting light's speed? 5.) Why does Special Relativity apply only to light, and not other waves like sound. The doppler effect is true for both light and sound waves, but sound does not appear to move at the speed of sound relative to a subsonic plane, it seems to move at the speed of sound minus the speed of the plane. 6.) If time and space are always relative to the observer, can they be said not to truly exist at all? 7.) If photons do not have mass, doesn't that mean they are not actually particles? To be a particle, something must have mass. more

Voting Question: My electricity just got turned back on and now half the house doesn't have working electric. Whats Wrong?

Our electric recently got turned back on from our electric company. Once it was turned back on again only half the house had power and the other half didn’t. This included one of the bedrooms, the fridge, the washer and dryer, the heating and air unit and the oven worked but nothing would heat up to its full potential. Before the electric was turned off everything worked perfected. The power company even came back to see if anything was done wrong while turning back on the electricity outside, but it was normal. For a while after it initially was turned back on I remember here I sound that resembled a locus and the lights in my room (with no electric) would be very faintly on and then turn off. Can anyone tell me what my problem may be? Also if we are in need of an electrician, do you know how much that would cost? We are struggling with money, but we need our important appliances to work again and our air unit. For the moment we have extension cords traveling through the hall into the bed room and the fridge, but the this can’t be done with the Dryer, Air unit and Oven… Please HELP!The power guy who turned back on my electric made sure that the right amount of electric was coming into the house. I also tried turning off the main switch and all the other breakers and then turning them back on... that didn't work. I made sure none were tripped. I also took off the main plate and tried to tighten them. more

Does this sound... okay? or bad? or what? I already posted this question... but i added onto my story, and i want to know how it sounds. Personally, i think the beginning is better and that the rest is rushed and repetative, but i still like the writing. P.s. im only 12, so cut me some slack. I pushed his head so it was back where it was before, and made an effort. more

Resolved Question: I just want a critique?

Imagine a world that smells of death. Imagine a world that has rivers of blood traveling its black hills. Imagine a world where innocence is long forgotten. A world where the sky is always dark, because the sun has hidden its face, fearing the inhabitants of that world. This world that you are seeing in your mind’s eye… is my world. It wasn’t always that way. My world used to be filled with magic. The rivers flowed with healing waters that kept the hills and their inhabitants healthy and animated. The wind would sing sweet melodies as it blew through your hair. You could see Centaurs galloping across the larana fields, and nymphs dancing in the forests. The most cherished memory in my possession is the smell that used to always be in the air. Our entire world smelled of roses and honey. Every time you took a breath, the smell would be present. Now the world reeks of death and stolen dreams. The wind howls with the cries of helpless victims. Hope is a feeling that has been long forgotten. I myself have almost lost the feeling. Hope is a hard feeling to grab hold of. Just when you think you have it trapped in your palm, it slides through your fingers. Even now I am trying to capture that feeling, but I fear that it will again slip free of my grasp. I have nothing. I lay in my cell, waiting for my fate to come and take me where it may. The wait is unbearable, but I am not afraid. They will not kill me; no I am much too valuable. I am a Voctrus. Though my species has a hollow meaning to you at present, it will not stay hollow for long. I am a creature of both light and dark. I am beautiful and hideous. I am consoling and terrifying. I can see your thoughts. I can see who you are, and who you wish to become. I am stronger than a god. I can flatten a mountain by flexing my smallest finger; I can shake a world by waving my wrist. I cannot die unless killed. Yet now, I am in a cell. There are powers that not even I can comprehend nor control. Light is stronger than darkness, but how can I keep my light when the sun itself has been darkened? The cell I sit in keeps me in a state in which I have no power. It is made so that I cannot shut out the darkness of my world. In my cell, the air is a bitter cold. My white hair freezes to my face, and my yellow eyes are permanently open, although this makes no difference. The prison is darker with my eyes open then with them closed. My dark skin is covered in warm blood, and dead creatures litter the ground around me. Reminding me of the rotting and decaying of my world. The wind howls through unseen cracks, Whispering to me tales of death and woe. Sometimes the winds carry memories to me, memories of swords clashing, children screaming, and bones being grinded into dust. I would rather die than endure such misery, but they won’t kill me. I am much too valuable. I have been here only for a period of four weeks, yet it feels as if years have gone by. I have had no food, no water, and no word from my captors. That won’t last long though. Even now I hear the sound of a metal door opening and heavy footsteps. The intruder may be one of Zorac’s officers. I cannot tell who it is presently; they need to keep it dark so that my powers do not return. They are getting closer; they are within three yards of me. The footsteps have halted. more

Resolved Question: Science Project: make an instrument.?

Hey, I am having some trouble with this school project that's due next week, and I couldn't really find anything remotely helpful on google, so.... Here's the idea: I am supposed to make an instrument, which cannot be any one invented already, although it can look like it and be similar in design. It has to be simple (by my standards, not the teacher's), and I have to draw a diagram on it when I'm done of how it works, the materials used, and then answer questions on the instrument. It's all rotated around sound and vibrations, how the sounds echo and travel through the air. Please, if you have any ideas for an instrument, help!Oh, and it has to have different tones. I also have to present it in front of the class with a song, already written or made up. more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this essay?

I wrote this for an English Assignment and would like input. I want to be a writer and need someone else's opinion aside from family and friends. Once there was a very meditative man that contemplated everything. One day during his numerous contemplations he fell asleep. While he was asleep he had a very odd nightmare. In this nightmare he was a very noble knight of old England in search of fabled and mysterious things. He was required to go on this quest to prove that he did indeed have good in his cold, black, heart or he would face an eternity in an infernal wasteland. He also had a general air of haughtiness about him, and that is why he was required to go on this quest. He was to go and save a maiden from a dastardly evil creature and was to kill any harmful creatures that got in his way. When he started on this quest the knight was traveling through a vast desert. When he was in the exact middle of the desert, he came upon a big tree with a bird perched on it's biggest bough. At first he thought that it was a mirage, but as he got closer, he realized that this bird was none other than a phoenix. He reveled in the thought of killing this magnificent, fiery, red, phoenix, but he decided not to kill it and keep him as a friend throughout his travels. The knight spoke and asked the phoenix,“Would you please join me in my travels?” “Why yes, O Haughty knight. Though, I must say that I am surprised by your question.” replied the phoenix. “Why?” asked the knight. “Because I heard your thoughts back there. I must tell you that I am most pleased with your decision and would be happy to join you.” replied the phoenix. So the two went on their merry way. As the two continued through the desert they had a very interesting conversation about many things, but mainly about the types of magical powers that a phoenix possesses. When they reached the end of the desert, they were both overjoyed that they had reached the end of what seemed an interminable desert. They sat down for an interlude. After a while once the two were rested up they heard a terrible sound. This sound came from a very eerie looking cave. The phoenix looked smartly at the knight and said, “That is where we need to go.” “A-a-are you-u-u sure?” asked the knight. “Yes. This is where your maiden will be. Besides I thought you were fearless, but it seems to be that you are just as haughty as the others.” said the phoenix. “No! I will be haughty no more!” exclaimed the knight as he ran into the cave. When he was inside he saw the maiden and the dastardly evil beast, along with a wailing banshee. The knight looked frightfully around the cave. After awhile the knight took a really good look at this dastardly evil beast and realized that it was the very image his former black-hearted self with every bit of the air of haughtiness that he had before he started his quest. He was shocked to see how much he had changed since the beginning of his quest. The banshee nodded to the beast and spoke, “Knight you have completed your quest well. You will not need to fight this beast today.” “Why not?” asked the knight. “You have learned your lesson.” the banshee replied. “What is this lesson?” asked the knight. The banshee and phoenix chuckled together. Then the phoenix flew over to the banshee and grabbed something out of it's hand. Then the phoenix flew back over to the knight and placed what was a very dingy looking mirror in his hand. He then looked at the knight and said, “Look at yourself in this mirror. What do you see?” The knight did so and said, “I see myself and my heart.” “Yes. Anything in particular about your heart that looks stunning?” asked the phoenix. “Yes! It's not black anymore!” exclaimed the knight. The phoenix nodded and said, “Exactly. You have completed your quest by getting rid of your haughtiness and black heart and are now the noble knight that you have claimed to be. Because of this my friend, the banshee has something for you.” The phoenix looked at the banshee and nodded. The banshee then stared at the creature and a white light filled the cave for just a moment. When the light vanished in the place of a creature was a key. The banshee then looked at the knight and said, “This key unlocks the maiden's chains and will free her.” The knight grabbed the key and freed the maiden. She was very happy and said, “I am the daughter of a very wealthy Lord of England and we will bestow riches and land to you as tokens of our appreciation for rescuing me.” “No. I need no rewards.” replied the knight. The phoenix looked at him and said, “You are no longer the haughty knight, but the Humble Knight.” At this point our having this strange, transcendent nightmare woke up. He realized that he needed to change his life and stop being like the black-hearted and haughty knight. more

Resolved Question: Sound? Waves? I have no idea how to do this problem!?

A hammer taps on the end of a 3.80-m-long metal bar at room temperature. A microphone at the other end of the bar picks up two pulses of sound, one that travels through the metal and one that travels through the air. The pulses are separated in time by 10.8 ms. What is the speed of sound in this metal? :( I don't even know how to approach this, an advice at all would be nice! It's probably really obvious. more

Resolved Question: Confessions of an honest black american?

My distant cousins in African live in abject poverty, are surrounded by political corruption and exist in a perennial state of health crisis due to AIDS and other endemic diseases. Yet here am I — as black as they — enjoying the comfort of my modest American home, the owner of two automobiles, and access to the most advanced health care system ever known. Why the difference? It can be summed in simple observation: My African kin are the living legacy of our African heritage. I, on the other hand, am the beneficiary of Western European culture. Granted, that observation smacks of racial betrayal. But it is also a matter of reality. White people, once free from the medieval madness of feudalism, applied themselves to industry and, having learned to bridal social injustice, blessed their cultures – and the rest of the world – with standards of living that would have been the envy of the greatest emperors of antiquity. It was a matter of fate that my ancestors were snatched from their African village by slave traders. Am I glad they suffered the pain and indignities of slavery? Of course not. But I am fortunate. And I am grateful that they got on that boat! There are some who call me a fool for ignoring the lingering injustice that our African American community endures. For every dollar earned by white families, they say, we earn 62 cents. Indeed, statistics are cold calculators that cannot be ignored. $31,969 was the medium income for black families in 2008. White families earned more — much more — $50,673! Families living in Africa, however earned a mere $315. I ask my black American friends: Where would you rather be? In America earning 62 percent compared to white Americans? Or in Africa, earning 1 percent compared to black Americans? Do you not understand that our African cousins would need to work 100 years to earn what we earn in one year? And do I dare mention the Reverend Jeremiah Wright? Shall I mention that, after a career of denouncing our white countrymen, Rev. Wright retired in a white community in a $1.6 million home? Did you know that the annual wages of 5,000 Africans would hardly cover the cost? No, I am not betraying my race; I am stating my case. The descendants of American slaves are the blessed beneficiaries of Western culture. White people gave us flight, electricity and computers. It was their culture that reached the moon, discovered and unraveled the mysteries of DNA, and probed the depths of human anatomy. They attached contraptions on their buggies and, a generation later, drove the world along Interstate highways. They replaced famine with food so abundant that obesity has become our great health concern. They connected us with terminals for traveling through air at 500 miles per hour and terminals for traveling through cyberspace at the speed of light. We gave them the Motown sound. They gave us the technology to allow that sound to be recorded and heard around the world. Lecture me on the evils of the white devils if you will. And, for the most part, I will agree. But I will do so here, in America, not Africa. And I will remind you that in America white people elect black leaders. In Africa black people depose white leaders. And for that, their cultures suffer. How foolish we are in own blind racist rage to destroy the western culture that enriches every aspect of our lives. How foolish to amuses ourselves with grand delusions when, in reality, we are merely regressing to the pathetic lives of our ancient culture. Western culture is rapidly eroding. When it is gone, where will we go? Back to Africa? Back to bathing our babies in cow urine? Back to subsistence living in grass huts? Back to the witch doctors and grotesque lip plates? Back to the bloated bellies of emaciated children? Back to tribal wars and brutal chieftains? Back to ignorance and high mortality? Do we really want to go back to that Africa? Yes, I am grateful my ancestors got on that boat. And you should be grateful, too — while it lasts. more

Resolved Question: Small Excerpt From One Of My Chapters, I'd Love Some Opinions?

First off, I'd like you to know that I don't want to get this published, I'm writing it for fun. Secondly, it is about vampires and if you have a problem with that you should probably just leave this question now. I write about them because they intrigue me, not because I'm a Twilight fangirl or because they're the 'in thing'. So Dominique (the main char) is a vampire, and Joshua is a human she knows. She thinks of him as an ally and he thinks of her as a friend. He's stormed in and started kissing Dominique and Joshua thought she was going to throw him off but she started kissing him back and that's all you really need to know before this part. Trying to guess his next move, I arched closer to his body and breathed Joshua in. A tickle spread over my nose as I savored his delicious fragrance, locking it in my memory. Our lips slightly met again, but they parted when we began to hurriedly move backwards, towards my bed. His lips smiled on mine, and I turned so that I could push him onto the mattress. Straddling his waist, Joshua sat up and cupped my cheek so that he could lightly peck my lips. We reluctantly detached our lips as Joshua shuffled his shirt off and threw it to the floor. I took a mental picture of Joshua's body as I grabbed his shoulders, my lips pressing down hard on his. Joshua and I only separated our lips when we needed to gasp for air, one of his hands holding my cheek and the other supporting my back. My lips traveled down his cheek and to his jawline, leaving a trail of kiss until I found his neck. Coming to a halt, I inhaled deeply, my body quivering as Joshua's scent rolled into my nose. As a tingle swept over my gum and my canines lengthened, I realized that the longing for Joshua's blood was the strongest urge I had ever felt. The fragrance was utterly delicious and being so close to the source was even better than in the bar, it was overpowering. Not being able to resist, I pecked Joshua's jugular and urgently gnawed on it, receiving gasps from Joshua. One of my fangs penetrated his skin, drawing a slight amount of blood. Joshua's body shook in pain, grabbing my waist and trying to force me off of him. There was no way I could stop now. Joshua's blood flowed into my mouth, it's flavour almost indescribable. The sweetness fought with how sour it was -- bittersweet blood. Sinking my other canine in made Joshua yelp. "Dominique, what are you doing!" Joshua breathed through clenched teeth, again trying to pry me off. It was futile. My pure hunger suffocated Joshua's screams and words, the world around me dissolved and nothing seemed to matter as this entrancing liquid slipped from his body. Just like a snake belonged in the jungle, as this slithered down my throat, it belonged in me. Clasping his shoulders to keep him from struggling made me think that my Allure made it all too easy, and took all of the fun out of it. His hand curled around the sheets and his body got limper. Driving all of my teeth into his throat, a hoarse and hopeless sound made his lips part. "Dom, please, s-stop!" Joshua's muffled voice tried to make me listen to his pleas. Joshua. The name sounded familiar, but as the crimson blood rushed into my mouth, a surge of pleasure swept through me and I just couldn't care. Joshua's throat made my groan muffled and one of my hands glided up from his shoulder and clutched the back of his hair roughly. As his blood rolled down his bare back and onto the white sheets bellow us, I had to admit that I was being extremely messy. His blood. Joshua's blood. It hit me like a gust of air, almost knocking me back. My elixir that contained the fine and exotic wine wasn't just a human, it was Joshua. Trying to wrench my teeth out of Joshua was a hopeless attempt, and my animal instincts denied me doing anything that I willed. My hand came down to his neck and clasped it, Joshua's life kept entering my mouth as I ached to have every last drop in my mouth, but also frantic to stop. But as his hands loosened their grip on the sheets and his body slumped, the thought dawned on me that I might not be able to stop. What do you think? Does it flow and have the right pace? I have asked this question lately, but some of it's changed a bit. Thanks in advance ;D. ~Nicole.xxThanks everyone for answering (: If you're interested, you can read the first three chapters here: http://www.worthyofpublishing.com/book.asp?book_ID=2806 more

Resolved Question: Small Excerpt From Something I'm Writing, I'd Love Some Opinions?

Okay. Before you read this, I just want you to know that I don't want to get this published. It's something I write for fun. Also, it is about vampires and if you have a problem with that, you might as well leave this question now. I'm not interested in what you have to say about it being on vampires, all I want is some opinions on the piece. (Sorry if I sound grumpy, I'm just getting a bit sick of it). So, this is in the third chapter and it does get a little bit sexual (nothing too raunchy) and violent. Dominique is the vampire and main character, and Joshua is a human. She had always thought of him as an ally, and he thinks of her as a friend. Suddenly, a knock echoed off the door. Even I hadn't seen it coming, and I pouted my lips as the annoyance returned to my stomach. I wasn't in the mood to be disturbed. When I opened the door, Joshua was standing there. My mouth was about to fall open and ask him what the hell he was doing here, when his lips crashed down on mine. At first they were wary, and I’m sure he was certain I would throw him off of me. But I couldn't stop my lips reacting; it had been many years since I they had been this active on another man's. The lust slithered through my body as my hand found the front of his white T-Shirt and grasped it. When Joshua realized I was kissing him in return, he slipped one of his hands around my face, drew his fingers through my hair and clutched strands. His tongue found mine and they danced together, and I felt it trace my angular fangs. Both of my hands came up to his thick arms, grasping them and loving the thick flesh. As Joshua's blood rolled down his bare back and onto the white sheets bellow us, I had to admit that I was being extremely messy. So, what do you think (;? I appreciate the help, thanks in advance. ~Nicole.xx more

Resolved Question: Excerpt From Something I'm Writing, I'd Love Some Opinions?

My mouth was about to fall open in a rant to ask him what the hell he was doing here, when his lips crashed down on mine. Our lips never left each others as his tongue found mine and they danced together. I felt his tongue trace my angular fangs and both of my hands came up to his thick arms, grasping them and loving the thick flesh. Soon I came to realize that a goodnight kiss was not all Joshua was after when he slid his free hand down my neck and trailed it in down my chest and over my stomach. Ever so lightly, he found the edge of my singlet and brushed his fingers against my bare skin, the feeling of his warm touch sent a shiver of thrill through me. Trying to guess his next move, I arched closer to his body and breathed Joshua in. A tickle spread over my nose as I savored his delicious fragrance, locking it in my memory. Our kiss was broken off and his mouth pursued around my cheek, down to my neck. A whimper of desperation escaped my lips as Joshua kissed and nibbled. I took a mental picture of Joshua's rippled, gorgeous abs as I grabbed his shoulders, my lips pressing down hard on his. Suddenly, I realized that I didn't just long for Joshua's body, but I also longed for his blood. It was utterly delicious and being so close to the source was even better than in the bar, it was overpowering. Resolved Question: Am I any good at story writing ?

Well This is one of my english essays for my coursework and I just wanted to no your opinions really . We had a structure to follow but the rest was up to us and we had to keep it short . I'd like a career in writing so this means alot and sorry for any punctuation/spelling mistakes China Heart - By Kate Elvin What happens when our bodies die? . All I knew was that I was dead inside , rotting like an old wooden dock or rusty railing’s ; my heart was stone cold metal , A thick copper layer of rust; my troubled past suffocated that metallic beating organ , was it still beating ? Or were those beating drums the sound of the ripples of winter’s menacingly icy breath travelling along my bones. I was that frozen winter, cold and hollow and alone. The landscape was a perfect clinical white, Framed by rusty mountains. Pigeons fountained into the air above the silent blanket covered with snow, and as the full moon shone down that snow was covered with millions of iridescent gem stones indented with small glistening pools of light forming in the crinkled white blanket like the ripples in the ocean. The ice burned my tongue like citrus fruits. And the moaning tree’s echoed around my eardrums. The landscape appeared empty against the angry sky. Black as the heart of evil the clouds thundered through the sky. Speckles of gray paint on a dark canvas. I looked through my mind like looking into a burning forest bright white with spiking crimson embers, my eyes traveled through those rust stained mountains and everything seemed worthless. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that’s what the Doctor said he didn’t no me. He didn’t no what I was. My whole life revolved around routine. Everything had to be perfect. My body like the tired arms of a leaf stripped sycamore. My heart was bone china, the days where long and slow because I was so severely fragile. Then I met him. My eyes drawn to the gaping hole upon his ivory cheeks .With his traveler’s eyes and strangers smile, he gave me a future, my future. His features where sharp and prominent in comparison to his chalk face touched by the fingers of a ghost. His skin like cold stone. His eyes black like an ink dipped quill. He told me how he knew me. So many people said how they knew me but something about his eyes the intense look upon his brow told me to trust him. So that’s what I did I let him right into my very soul my china heart. He gave me a vision of the future; I was the leader of a great nation. My complex mind somehow working to help rid this selfish world from famine and poverty. I had so much power, I could change the way the world spun on its axis, I could change those rusty mountains, I could burn that angry sky those thundering clouds. I could change me. more

Resolved Question: Physics Problems #2 Help Please?

I came across these questions in my homework (due a different day), and I have no idea what to do. If you could know which equation to use, or even help me step by step, that would be greatly appreciated! If you don't know how to do a problem, that's fine too. 1. Two trains on separate tracks move towards on another. Train 1 has a speed of 130 km/h, train 2 has a speed of 90 km/h. Train 2 blows its horn, emitting a frequency of 500 Hz. What is the frequency heard by the engineer on train 1? 2. A bat flying at 5 m/s emits a chirp at 40 kHz. If this sound pulse is reflected by a wall, what is the frequency of the echo, received by the bat? 3. An alert physics student stands beside the tracks as a train rolls slowly past. He notes that the frequency of the train whistle is 442 Hz when the train is approaching him and 441 Hz when the train is receding from him. Using these frequencies, he calculates the speed of the train. What value does he find? 4. Expectant parents are thrilled to hear their unborn baby's heartbeat, revealed by an ultrasonic motion detector. Suppose the featus's ventricular wall moves in cmiple harmonic motion with amplitude 1.8 mm and frequency 115 per minue. (a) Find the maximum linear speed of the heart wall. Suppose the motion detector in contact with the mother's abdomen produces sound at precisely 2 MHz, which travels through tissue at 1.5 km/s. (b) Find the maximum frequency at which sound arrives at the wall of the baby's heart. (c) Find the maximum frequency at which reflected sound is received by the motion detector. 5. A tuning fork vibrating at 512 HZ falls from rest and accelerates at 9.80 m/s. How far below the point of release is the tuning fork when waves of frequency 485 Hz reach the release point? Take the speed of sound in air to be 340 m/s. 6. A spersonic jet traveling at Mach 3 at an altitude of 20,000 m is directly overhead at time t=0. How long will it be before the ground observer encounters the shock wave? Where will the plain be when it is finally heart? Thankyou again for the help! more

Resolved Question: I need help on the tone of this poem!!?

How would you describe the tone of this poem? (Mushrooms by Margaret Atwood) In this moist season, mist on the lake and thunder afternoons in the distance they ooze up through the earth during the night, like bubbles, like tiny bright red balloons filling with water; a sound below sound, the thumbs of rubber gloves turned softly inside out. In the mornings, there is the leaf mold starred with nipples, with cool white fishgills, leathery purple brains, fist-sized suns dulled to the colors of embers, poisonous moons, pale yellow. Where do they come from? For each thunderstorm that travels overhead there's another storm that moves parallel in the ground. Struck lightning is where they meet. Underfoot there's a cloud of rootlets, shed hairs or a bundle of loose threads blown slowly through the midsoil. These are their flowers, these fingers reaching through darkness to the sky, these eyeblinks that burst and powder the air with spores. They feed in shade, on halfleaves as they return to water, on slowly melting logs, deadwood. They glow in the dark sometimes. They taste of rotten meat or cloves or cooking steak or bruised lips or new snow. It isn't only for food I hunt them but for the hunt and because they smell of death and the waxy skins of the newborn, flesh into earth into flesh. Here is the handful of shadow I have brought back to you: this decay, this hope, this mouth- ful of dirt, this poetry. more

Resolved Question: Sylvia Browne Predictions for the Next 100 Years.....?

Tell me if you believe, in a hundred years that any of these predictions can happen. If so, which ones do you hope are true? •Eradication of cancer as we know it, using sound waves, photo sensitive drug therapy, and "self-addicting" cells. •Robotic houses, controlled by computerized switchboard. •Electrical cars with flotation ability for water travel to bypass freeways. •Houses made from pressed paper with plastic coatings; interchangeable walls •Separate body parts cloned for organ transplants; not an entire body. •New form of painless tooth extraction, using a type of suction, with immediate replacement of new tooth. •Diagnostic chambers which map the body's electrical balance to predict health problems before the come. •Cylindrical rooms in which people enter to see an automated projection of the clothing and color that would look good on them; select what you want, take your measurements, then two days later pick up the goods. •Third floor of houses have rollback roofs to allow Hovercrafts to come and go. •No more surgery with knives. Some type of molecular ionization device that knows how to take out the afflicted cells then seal the wound without a single scar. •Remolding of the whole face structure, to duplicate any look that you wish. •New exercise equipment that you sit or stand in, and it literally stimulates your muscles with electricity to achieve the same effect as physical exercise. •Babies will be birthed in water all the time, with music, incense, and green and lavender lights. •People will be able to simply "walk out" of their bodies upon death. •There will be no US Presidency; our government will go back to a Greek Senate structure. •No longer a single Pope, but a triumvirate of Popes, each assigned to a geographic collection of Catholics. •Peace in the Middle East will prevail by 2050. •West Coast goes under in 2026. Parts of the East Coast also get inundated. Tsunamis will wipe out a large portion of Japan. •The Hawaiian Islands will have upheaval and be the site of a large new landmass. •Atlantis will begin to show itself by 2023 and be fully visible by 2026. •After 2050, the "Age of the Messiah" is upon us. People turn totally toward Spirituality, peace will rein for a long time. People will return to community living, loving each other, and working together. •Treatment for depression and mood disorders will come from a "control chamber" that emits sensory stimulation gently to the brain, including certain smells, which will elevate mood. •Medicine in pill form goes away; instead we have air-injected delivery through the skin. •Atomic batteries will run cars. •No more gas propelled rockets in space; we will have nuclear powered cylinder shaped objects that travel everywhere. •A moon base is created for people to visit, and as a stopping place for further trips. By 2055 most people will live in domed cities due to poor atmospheric conditions. •A virtual reality headset will stimulate brain waves so people can learn whole libraries of information within hours. •Giant fruits and vegetables will be grown in hothouse environments. The nutrients will be synthesized into a highly condensed injection. •Proteins are developed without animal meat, very powerful, builds immune system. •Addictions will be a thing of the past because of a brain stimulation, which eradicates all addictions, with no side effects •Execution for the death penalty will become a complete vaporization of the body. •No separate governments, one planetary government will form. •Great earth changes will occur and germ warfare will be used before the world finds peace. But eventually from all of the bad comes good. The pendulum will swing back to humanity and love. •No world war is coming, but lots of civil disorder and small skirmishes. No nuclear holocaust. •Peace will last from 2050 until 2100, and then I see nothing beyond, which could mean "the end will come like a thief in the night." •Toward the end of things, the veil separating our world from The Other Side will thin, so much so that most people will see decease loved ones and speak with their Spirit Guides. •There will be many false prophets that rise up proclaiming to be Jesus on Earth, and try to lead people astray. We are already seeing this in the big rise of occultism. •People will again find Spirituality, not so much in organized religion, but in the spiritual brotherhood of coming together and finding their Temple within. •Four more comets will pass by before the end times. •Aliens will begin to show themselves in the year 2010, they will not harm us, they simply want to see what we are doing to this planet. They will teach us how to use anti-gravity devices again, such as they did for the pyramids.I am not saying any of these "predictions" are true. I'm just laying them out to be criticized on their probability. more
