How Does Sound Travel Through Air Questions asked

Open Question: Is my short story any good?

Here is a short story I wrote for school. Please be brutally honest. Oh, and BTW, this is about an earthquake that never happened, in case anybody gets technical! :) Amongst the rubble. I was running faster than I thought I could possibly run, adrenaline pumping through my veins like I was on some kind of illegal steroid. My legs were moving by their own accord. My feet burned, my throat seared, my head ached, but I did not care. How could I? I was by no means fit, and I had never run this steadily, or this long before. I kept waiting for the moment when my over working lungs would finally pack in, from all the smoke, and filthy air I was greedily inhaling, but it did not come. I wouldn’t let it. I felt a foreign fire in my soul, which seemed to fuel my long exhausted engine. Hope was keeping me going. Hope, yes, but also terror. Terror of what I may find, or indeed, may never find, if I did not keep running. I would have been a lot easier to travel, had the buildings not all collapsed. Mounds and mounds of concrete, and the destroyed remains of the buildings that had stood there proudly, just hours a go, littered the streets, or what used to be the streets… Cries of agony and the unnerving sounds of slow, painful death were erupting from all sides of me. I didn’t dare look too long at anything. It was like a nightmare, only I couldn’t wake up. This was real life. This was actually happening. My whole world had been destroyed- literally. I wanted to lie down in a darkened room, and cry. But I could not. I had a job to do. The job did not have a ‘praising’ attached to it, nor money, nor anything. The reward, if I was to succeed, were two lives. Two lives of which I could not bring myself to live on, without. My mother’s strong voice, that had spoken only minutes before, rang louder in my head, than the warning sirens that were still screaming-pointlessly, may I add. “Dehlahi. Ya’ll got to go find them. Please Dehlahi, do it for your Father, do it for them, do it for me.” My mother was dead. My father was dead. My sisters were all I had left. It seemed as if I had been running for hours- long, painful, heartbreaking hours, but when I looked behind my shoulder, I wanted to slap myself. I was only four small streets away from where I had begun my ‘epic journey’. I needed to get all the way to the other side of Portmore, (a beautiful- or what used to be a beautiful city in Jamaica,) and I felt as if I would never get there. If only the earthquake hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have had to dodge so much, and run whilst watching where my feet were going. Then again, if the freakin’ earthquake hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t be having to go anywhere in the first place. I turned blindly round a sharp corner, and thwacked painfully into someone. My elbows and knees flowed relentlessly with hot, sticky blood, and my forehead felt as if someone was carving symbols on it with a blunt razor. I looked up gingerly, bracing myself for the hard booted, well-aimed kick that was sure to be given to me generously. To my surprise, a handsome, ivory faced, kind looking young man, held out his muscled arm, which was all concealed by his khaki uniform, except for his leathery hands, and forearms. My face grew hot with embarrassment as I pulled myself up with it. I had never seen a white man in Portmore before, and I almost felt stupid as my sleeve rolled up, exposing my dark, unremarkable Jamaican complexion, that everyone here had. Surely, he thought me ugly. But, strangely, he smiled softly at me, and I felt as if I didn't have a care in the world. He spoke in such an accent I had only heard on the radio. His English was fluent and velvety, and I wanted very much to ask where he had come from, but I couldn’t find my voice. “I’m so sorry ma’am, are you quite hurt?” he asked, sounding genuinely concerned. His eyes were the brightest of blue, and seemed to sparkle in the non-existent sunlight. He was beautiful, but he almost frightened me. I had always been good at looking people straight in the eyes, but the shocking colour of his made it hard. I was used to soft, calm, deep brown. “Yes, Sir, I just didn’t see where I was going. I’ll go now Sir.” I took one last look into his glorious eyes, and turned to start running. I had completely forgotten about what I had to do, and I felt unbelievably awful. The people that I dearly loved could be dying, and here I was, gawking at some pretty white man. Ugh. I am beyond selfish. I tried to ignore the shouts that were following me from the soldier, as I knew that they must be in my imagination anyway. I had almost made it to the end of the shamble of a street, when a rough hand gripped firmly on my shoulder. I peered around instinctively, and my heart missed a beat when I saw the handsome soldier’s face less than half a metre from my own. As soon as I had stopped, he loosened his grip, and smiled asmile so cheekily that I wanted to laugh. I was confused though. What on earth was he doing? “Excuse me ma’am, I’m sorry, but you have to come with me. I am a Soldier from the British Army, and I have to gather every live person on this Island, and take you to a safety shelter, where the helicopters will land and take you all to the hospitals near about” He spoke in such a professional manner, that I couldn’t help but take him seriously. “I can’t Sir! I have to find my sisters!” my voice sounded week, and frail, and annoyed me tremendously. “It’s orders ma’am. I’m sorry, but you have to come with me. The sooner you do, the sooner you’ll be out of this goddamn hell hole!” “I can’t Sir! I can’t! I have to go now! Take the little boy over there instead, he is dying, and is only a boy! Please!” My voice sounded pitiful, but he still listened. “Suit yourself ma’am, but try not to die. Stay safe” He said sadly, and quickly saluted to me, before sprinting oover to the particular pile of rubble, where the little boy I had indicated, lay crying and groaning wordlessly, half berried in the muck. I turned on my heels and began running again, promising myself that I would not stop again, until I reached my sisters. The eerie evening transformed from the devastatingly beautiful peachy sky, to an ugly, dim light. Still, my worn, stinging feet plodded steadily on. If only I had thought to bring shoes- I guess I hadn’t known that there would have been any need for running trainers! I stopped at least four times, and I shamefacedly admit, that I had broken the promise to myself. But it was only at the expense of the poor people I saw on the way. One of the times I had to stop, I deliberately shooting an old woman with a gun that just lay on the street. She had been bleeding horrifically; there was no way she would have survived. I hated what I had done, but I had put her out of her misery.I ran quickly round yet another quirky bend, and with a gasp of joy, mixed in with sheer horror, I stopped running. This was the place where their childminder lived. Her flat was in what had used to be the cellar. I walked briskly forward, shaking as I assessed the awful situation. My sisters, even before the earthquake, had been below ground level. They were buried somewhere deep beneath all of the concrete and mess. They were almost definitely dead. And there was nothing I could do. I searched desperately around where I was standing, helplessly looking for someone to come and help. Of course, there was nobody. They were all in the stupid shelters, waiting for the blessed helicopters. Just as I was about to start digging, a rustling had me spinning round to see where the noise had come from.. Unable to believe what I was seeing, I simply stood there, my eyes filling with uncontrollable emotion. There, amongst the rubble, bloody faced, and so dirty she could plant potatoes on herself, sat my little sister, Nagali, only three years old. I marched over to where she sat, cross-legged, and touched her tenderly on her tiny, delicate shoulder. She did not look up; she simply carried on gazing at the little bundle in her arms, which, to my great relief, turned out to be my youngest sister, Roulei, only six months old. Unable to fight with words, I sat down next to her, and pulled her, and baby Roulei, onto my lap. I stroked Nagili’s filthy black braids, and gently caressed baby Roulei’s cheek. It was stone cold. Nagili turned round, her beautiful, large chocolate brown eyes, wide and distraught, bore into mine. A single tear streamed down her face. more

Resolved Question: Do you understand Special Relativity?

I understand the basics of what Special Relativity says, but I do not understand the hows and whys. Here are a few of my questions, If you know how to explain this, it would truly help me: 1.) Is light the only thing that's relative, or the only thing that's absolute? Does light only travel at the speed of light relative to something stationary, or always relative to everything? If it's the latter, than that means light moves outward from a speeding train at the speed of light from the train's perspective... so wouldn't that mean it moves at the speed of light plus the speed of the train to a stationary observer? 2.) I know light is comprised of moving magnetic and electric fields, and that is how light can travel in the almost perfect vacuum of space. But is light simply a propagating variation in a medium of some electromagnetic field that exists everywhere, like sound is a propagating variation in the medium of air, or is light actually bringing it's own medium with it so to speak? In other words, is light a variation in an existing electromagnetic field, or does light bring an electromagnetic field to where it goes? 3.) Is it correct to say that light does not need a medium, like sound does, to travel through because the medium that light travels through is spacetime itself? Is this why it's not possible to travel faster than light? 4.) What determines the speed of light? There is clearly something limiting how fast it can go, since the speed of light is finite and light cannot go faster? What is determining and limiting light's speed? 5.) Why does Special Relativity apply only to light, and not other waves like sound. The doppler effect is true for both light and sound waves, but sound does not appear to move at the speed of sound relative to a subsonic plane, it seems to move at the speed of sound minus the speed of the plane. 6.) If time and space are always relative to the observer, can they be said not to truly exist at all? 7.) If photons do not have mass, doesn't that mean they are not actually particles? To be a particle, something must have mass. more

Open Question: My electricity just got turned back on and now half the house doesn't have working electric. Whats Wrong?

Our electric recently got turned back on from our electric company. Once it was turned back on again only half the house had power and the other half didn’t. This included one of the bedrooms, the fridge, the washer and dryer, the heating and air unit and the oven worked but nothing would heat up to its full potential. Before the electric was turned off everything worked perfected. The power company even came back to see if anything was done wrong while turning back on the electricity outside, but it was normal. For a while after it initially was turned back on I remember here I sound that resembled a locus and the lights in my room (with no electric) would be very faintly on and then turn off. Can anyone tell me what my problem may be? Also if we are in need of an electrician, do you know how much that would cost? We are struggling with money, but we need our important appliances to work again and our air unit. For the moment we have extension cords traveling through the hall into the bed room and the fridge, but the this can’t be done with the Dryer, Air unit and Oven… Please HELP!The power guy who turned back on my electric made sure that the right amount of electric was coming into the house. I also tried turning off the main switch and all the other breakers and then turning them back on... that didn't work. I made sure none were tripped. I also took off the main plate and tried to tighten them. more

Resolved Question: Does this sound... okay? or bad? or what?

Does this sound... okay? or bad? or what? I already posted this question... but i added onto my story, and i want to know how it sounds. Personally, i think the beginning is better and that the rest is rushed and repetative, but i still like the writing. P.s. im only 12, so cut me some slack. I could hear voices. Soft whispers, from a far away place. They weren’t mine, and they weren’t familiar. My eyes were closed, and I didn’t think I was able to open them. I had no strength. I had no power. I was useless. I felt like I was underwater, drowning. Something was choking me. It was painful. It gave me flashbacks . It gave me the terrifying memories of the unnoticeable amount of time I collapsed in the water, unable to take a breath, and the moment my body gave up on me. That was the day I became a spirit seeker. The voices seemed to get louder as they moved their way towards me. I wondered who they were. What did they want. I couldn’t make out what they were saying. It was all just a blur, with my mind traveling in circles, like it was flying threw the wind. The pain still kept gripping me, pulling me towards my death, but not quite strong enough to get me through the small space left to get there. I felt it when I opened my eyes. I felt the large sturdy hands, grabbing at my shoulders, pulling me towards it. I didn’t see it, though. Just like my mind, everything was a blur. The only word I recognized from the jumble was my name. Melody. My mother had named me that, not giving my father time to question. I remember her telling me what my name stood for. She said it stood for the soft music in our hearts, and the ringing in our ears. She said Melody was nothing like the music today, but only the music inside us. And with that, she had vanished in thin air. I was only seven. Nine, almost ten years had passed since then. I still couldn’t get over the soft drumming that she had permanently left in my mind. In my body. In my heart. I was starting to come back. It was even more painful than before, but I knew that the strength was working itself up inside me. I could feel the heat from the other persons breath on my neck, and I felt it trail down the back of my shirt and into the small of my back. I could feel the rough hands around me, one on my waist, and one on my shoulders. I could smell the air around me, the daisy that lingered in every breath. The rose that hung around my senses. I was starting to be able to see. I could see the rim of the pale blue t-shirt of the person, and I could see their neck as I was tucked into it. Most importantly, I could hear the voices around me, encouraging me to go further. “Come on, Melody. Wake up. Everything will be alright,” said a lone voice from above me. The hand clasped me harder, and I began to rock back in forth in the persons arms. I felt drops of water touch my cheek and trail down my nose, hitting the t-shirt with a thud that I seemed to hear, even though it seemed as if it were a mile away. “Is she going to be alright?” One of the other people asked “There would have to be a miracle for that to happen.” Said another. The person holding me still rocked back in forth, taking me with them. “Try turning her face out. Maybe she woke up.” Another said. Slowly, the rocking stopped, and within seconds I was laying on the ground, face up, staring towards the night sky. “Melody?” The one in the pale blue shirt asked, leaning his face so it was right above mine. I wondered who he was. What did he want, and how did it relate to what happened to me. There were tears waiting to spill out in his eyes as he started into mine, looking for hope, destiny. A miracle is what it would take to save me, the other one had said. But what was wrong with me? I felt alright, and I was sure I could get up… but it would take energy… a lot. “Melody, you have to show us some kind of signal. You have to be okay, Melody. You have to be okay!” He leaned down to press his head onto my chest, and my hands caught him halfway. I pushed his head so it was back where it was before, and made an effort. more

Resolved Question: I just want a critique?

Imagine a world that smells of death. Imagine a world that has rivers of blood traveling its black hills. Imagine a world where innocence is long forgotten. A world where the sky is always dark, because the sun has hidden its face, fearing the inhabitants of that world. This world that you are seeing in your mind’s eye… is my world. It wasn’t always that way. My world used to be filled with magic. The rivers flowed with healing waters that kept the hills and their inhabitants healthy and animated. The wind would sing sweet melodies as it blew through your hair. You could see Centaurs galloping across the larana fields, and nymphs dancing in the forests. The most cherished memory in my possession is the smell that used to always be in the air. Our entire world smelled of roses and honey. Every time you took a breath, the smell would be present. Now the world reeks of death and stolen dreams. The wind howls with the cries of helpless victims. Hope is a feeling that has been long forgotten. I myself have almost lost the feeling. Hope is a hard feeling to grab hold of. Just when you think you have it trapped in your palm, it slides through your fingers. Even now I am trying to capture that feeling, but I fear that it will again slip free of my grasp. I have nothing. I lay in my cell, waiting for my fate to come and take me where it may. The wait is unbearable, but I am not afraid. They will not kill me; no I am much too valuable. I am a Voctrus. Though my species has a hollow meaning to you at present, it will not stay hollow for long. I am a creature of both light and dark. I am beautiful and hideous. I am consoling and terrifying. I can see your thoughts. I can see who you are, and who you wish to become. I am stronger than a god. I can flatten a mountain by flexing my smallest finger; I can shake a world by waving my wrist. I cannot die unless killed. Yet now, I am in a cell. There are powers that not even I can comprehend nor control. Light is stronger than darkness, but how can I keep my light when the sun itself has been darkened? The cell I sit in keeps me in a state in which I have no power. It is made so that I cannot shut out the darkness of my world. In my cell, the air is a bitter cold. My white hair freezes to my face, and my yellow eyes are permanently open, although this makes no difference. The prison is darker with my eyes open then with them closed. My dark skin is covered in warm blood, and dead creatures litter the ground around me. Reminding me of the rotting and decaying of my world. The wind howls through unseen cracks, Whispering to me tales of death and woe. Sometimes the winds carry memories to me, memories of swords clashing, children screaming, and bones being grinded into dust. I would rather die than endure such misery, but they won’t kill me. I am much too valuable. I have been here only for a period of four weeks, yet it feels as if years have gone by. I have had no food, no water, and no word from my captors. That won’t last long though. Even now I hear the sound of a metal door opening and heavy footsteps. The intruder may be one of Zorac’s officers. I cannot tell who it is presently; they need to keep it dark so that my powers do not return. They are getting closer; they are within three yards of me. The footsteps have halted. more

Resolved Question: Science Project: make an instrument.?

Hey, I am having some trouble with this school project that's due next week, and I couldn't really find anything remotely helpful on google, so.... Here's the idea: I am supposed to make an instrument, which cannot be any one invented already, although it can look like it and be similar in design. It has to be simple (by my standards, not the teacher's), and I have to draw a diagram on it when I'm done of how it works, the materials used, and then answer questions on the instrument. It's all rotated around sound and vibrations, how the sounds echo and travel through the air. Please, if you have any ideas for an instrument, help!Oh, and it has to have different tones. I also have to present it in front of the class with a song, already written or made up. more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this essay?

I wrote this for an English Assignment and would like input. I want to be a writer and need someone else's opinion aside from family and friends. Once there was a very meditative man that contemplated everything. One day during his numerous contemplations he fell asleep. While he was asleep he had a very odd nightmare. In this nightmare he was a very noble knight of old England in search of fabled and mysterious things. He was required to go on this quest to prove that he did indeed have good in his cold, black, heart or he would face an eternity in an infernal wasteland. He also had a general air of haughtiness about him, and that is why he was required to go on this quest. He was to go and save a maiden from a dastardly evil creature and was to kill any harmful creatures that got in his way. When he started on this quest the knight was traveling through a vast desert. When he was in the exact middle of the desert, he came upon a big tree with a bird perched on it's biggest bough. At first he thought that it was a mirage, but as he got closer, he realized that this bird was none other than a phoenix. He reveled in the thought of killing this magnificent, fiery, red, phoenix, but he decided not to kill it and keep him as a friend throughout his travels. The knight spoke and asked the phoenix,“Would you please join me in my travels?” “Why yes, O Haughty knight. Though, I must say that I am surprised by your question.” replied the phoenix. “Why?” asked the knight. “Because I heard your thoughts back there. I must tell you that I am most pleased with your decision and would be happy to join you.” replied the phoenix. So the two went on their merry way. As the two continued through the desert they had a very interesting conversation about many things, but mainly about the types of magical powers that a phoenix possesses. When they reached the end of the desert, they were both overjoyed that they had reached the end of what seemed an interminable desert. They sat down for an interlude. After a while once the two were rested up they heard a terrible sound. This sound came from a very eerie looking cave. The phoenix looked smartly at the knight and said, “That is where we need to go.” “A-a-are you-u-u sure?” asked the knight. “Yes. This is where your maiden will be. Besides I thought you were fearless, but it seems to be that you are just as haughty as the others.” said the phoenix. “No! I will be haughty no more!” exclaimed the knight as he ran into the cave. When he was inside he saw the maiden and the dastardly evil beast, along with a wailing banshee. The knight looked frightfully around the cave. After awhile the knight took a really good look at this dastardly evil beast and realized that it was the very image his former black-hearted self with every bit of the air of haughtiness that he had before he started his quest. He was shocked to see how much he had changed since the beginning of his quest. The banshee nodded to the beast and spoke, “Knight you have completed your quest well. You will not need to fight this beast today.” “Why not?” asked the knight. “You have learned your lesson.” the banshee replied. “What is this lesson?” asked the knight. The banshee and phoenix chuckled together. Then the phoenix flew over to the banshee and grabbed something out of it's hand. Then the phoenix flew back over to the knight and placed what was a very dingy looking mirror in his hand. He then looked at the knight and said, “Look at yourself in this mirror. What do you see?” The knight did so and said, “I see myself and my heart.” “Yes. Anything in particular about your heart that looks stunning?” asked the phoenix. “Yes! It's not black anymore!” exclaimed the knight. The phoenix nodded and said, “Exactly. You have completed your quest by getting rid of your haughtiness and black heart and are now the noble knight that you have claimed to be. Because of this my friend, the banshee has something for you.” The phoenix looked at the banshee and nodded. The banshee then stared at the creature and a white light filled the cave for just a moment. When the light vanished in the place of a creature was a key. The banshee then looked at the knight and said, “This key unlocks the maiden's chains and will free her.” The knight grabbed the key and freed the maiden. She was very happy and said, “I am the daughter of a very wealthy Lord of England and we will bestow riches and land to you as tokens of our appreciation for rescuing me.” “No. I need no rewards.” replied the knight. The phoenix looked at him and said, “You are no longer the haughty knight, but the Humble Knight.” At this point our having this strange, transcendent nightmare woke up. He realized that he needed to change his life and stop being like the black-hearted and haughty knight. more

Resolved Question: Sound? Waves? I have no idea how to do this problem!?

A hammer taps on the end of a 3.80-m-long metal bar at room temperature. A microphone at the other end of the bar picks up two pulses of sound, one that travels through the metal and one that travels through the air. The pulses are separated in time by 10.8 ms. What is the speed of sound in this metal? :( I don't even know how to approach this, an advice at all would be nice! It's probably really obvious. more

Resolved Question: Confessions of an honest black american?

My distant cousins in African live in abject poverty, are surrounded by political corruption and exist in a perennial state of health crisis due to AIDS and other endemic diseases. Yet here am I — as black as they — enjoying the comfort of my modest American home, the owner of two automobiles, and access to the most advanced health care system ever known. Why the difference? It can be summed in simple observation: My African kin are the living legacy of our African heritage. I, on the other hand, am the beneficiary of Western European culture. Granted, that observation smacks of racial betrayal. But it is also a matter of reality. White people, once free from the medieval madness of feudalism, applied themselves to industry and, having learned to bridal social injustice, blessed their cultures – and the rest of the world – with standards of living that would have been the envy of the greatest emperors of antiquity. It was a matter of fate that my ancestors were snatched from their African village by slave traders. Am I glad they suffered the pain and indignities of slavery? Of course not. But I am fortunate. And I am grateful that they got on that boat! There are some who call me a fool for ignoring the lingering injustice that our African American community endures. For every dollar earned by white families, they say, we earn 62 cents. Indeed, statistics are cold calculators that cannot be ignored. $31,969 was the medium income for black families in 2008. White families earned more — much more — $50,673! Families living in Africa, however earned a mere $315. I ask my black American friends: Where would you rather be? In America earning 62 percent compared to white Americans? Or in Africa, earning 1 percent compared to black Americans? Do you not understand that our African cousins would need to work 100 years to earn what we earn in one year? And do I dare mention the Reverend Jeremiah Wright? Shall I mention that, after a career of denouncing our white countrymen, Rev. Wright retired in a white community in a $1.6 million home? Did you know that the annual wages of 5,000 Africans would hardly cover the cost? No, I am not betraying my race; I am stating my case. The descendants of American slaves are the blessed beneficiaries of Western culture. White people gave us flight, electricity and computers. It was their culture that reached the moon, discovered and unraveled the mysteries of DNA, and probed the depths of human anatomy. They attached contraptions on their buggies and, a generation later, drove the world along Interstate highways. They replaced famine with food so abundant that obesity has become our great health concern. They connected us with terminals for traveling through air at 500 miles per hour and terminals for traveling through cyberspace at the speed of light. We gave them the Motown sound. They gave us the technology to allow that sound to be recorded and heard around the world. Lecture me on the evils of the white devils if you will. And, for the most part, I will agree. But I will do so here, in America, not Africa. And I will remind you that in America white people elect black leaders. In Africa black people depose white leaders. And for that, their cultures suffer. How foolish we are in own blind racist rage to destroy the western culture that enriches every aspect of our lives. How foolish to amuses ourselves with grand delusions when, in reality, we are merely regressing to the pathetic lives of our ancient culture. Western culture is rapidly eroding. When it is gone, where will we go? Back to Africa? Back to bathing our babies in cow urine? Back to subsistence living in grass huts? Back to the witch doctors and grotesque lip plates? Back to the bloated bellies of emaciated children? Back to tribal wars and brutal chieftains? Back to ignorance and high mortality? Do we really want to go back to that Africa? Yes, I am grateful my ancestors got on that boat. And you should be grateful, too — while it lasts. more

Resolved Question: Small Excerpt From One Of My Chapters, I'd Love Some Opinions?

First off, I'd like you to know that I don't want to get this published, I'm writing it for fun. Secondly, it is about vampires and if you have a problem with that you should probably just leave this question now. I write about them because they intrigue me, not because I'm a Twilight fangirl or because they're the 'in thing'. So Dominique (the main char) is a vampire, and Joshua is a human she knows. She thinks of him as an ally and he thinks of her as a friend. He's stormed in and started kissing Dominique and Joshua thought she was going to throw him off but she started kissing him back and that's all you really need to know before this part. Trying to guess his next move, I arched closer to his body and breathed Joshua in. A tickle spread over my nose as I savored his delicious fragrance, locking it in my memory. Our lips slightly met again, but they parted when we began to hurriedly move backwards, towards my bed. His lips smiled on mine, and I turned so that I could push him onto the mattress. Straddling his waist, Joshua sat up and cupped my cheek so that he could lightly peck my lips. We reluctantly detached our lips as Joshua shuffled his shirt off and threw it to the floor. I took a mental picture of Joshua's body as I grabbed his shoulders, my lips pressing down hard on his. Joshua and I only separated our lips when we needed to gasp for air, one of his hands holding my cheek and the other supporting my back. My lips traveled down his cheek and to his jawline, leaving a trail of kiss until I found his neck. Coming to a halt, I inhaled deeply, my body quivering as Joshua's scent rolled into my nose. As a tingle swept over my gum and my canines lengthened, I realized that the longing for Joshua's blood was the strongest urge I had ever felt. The fragrance was utterly delicious and being so close to the source was even better than in the bar, it was overpowering. Not being able to resist, I pecked Joshua's jugular and urgently gnawed on it, receiving gasps from Joshua. One of my fangs penetrated his skin, drawing a slight amount of blood. Joshua's body shook in pain, grabbing my waist and trying to force me off of him. There was no way I could stop now. Joshua's blood flowed into my mouth, it's flavour almost indescribable. The sweetness fought with how sour it was -- bittersweet blood. Sinking my other canine in made Joshua yelp. "Dominique, what are you doing!" Joshua breathed through clenched teeth, again trying to pry me off. It was futile. My pure hunger suffocated Joshua's screams and words, the world around me dissolved and nothing seemed to matter as this entrancing liquid slipped from his body. Just like a snake belonged in the jungle, as this slithered down my throat, it belonged in me. Clasping his shoulders to keep him from struggling made me think that my Allure made it all too easy, and took all of the fun out of it. His hand curled around the sheets and his body got limper. Driving all of my teeth into his throat, a hoarse and hopeless sound made his lips part. "Dom, please, s-stop!" Joshua's muffled voice tried to make me listen to his pleas. Joshua. The name sounded familiar, but as the crimson blood rushed into my mouth, a surge of pleasure swept through me and I just couldn't care. Joshua's throat made my groan muffled and one of my hands glided up from his shoulder and clutched the back of his hair roughly. As his blood rolled down his bare back and onto the white sheets bellow us, I had to admit that I was being extremely messy. His blood. Joshua's blood. It hit me like a gust of air, almost knocking me back. My elixir that contained the fine and exotic wine wasn't just a human, it was Joshua. Trying to wrench my teeth out of Joshua was a hopeless attempt, and my animal instincts denied me doing anything that I willed. My hand came down to his neck and clasped it, Joshua's life kept entering my mouth as I ached to have every last drop in my mouth, but also frantic to stop. But as his hands loosened their grip on the sheets and his body slumped, the thought dawned on me that I might not be able to stop. What do you think? Does it flow and have the right pace? I have asked this question lately, but some of it's changed a bit. Thanks in advance ;D. ~Nicole.xxThanks everyone for answering (: If you're interested, you can read the first three chapters here: http://www.worthyofpublishing.com/book.asp?book_ID=2806 more

Resolved Question: Small Excerpt From Something I'm Writing, I'd Love Some Opinions?

Okay. Before you read this, I just want you to know that I don't want to get this published. It's something I write for fun. Also, it is about vampires and if you have a problem with that, you might as well leave this question now. I'm not interested in what you have to say about it being on vampires, all I want is some opinions on the piece. (Sorry if I sound grumpy, I'm just getting a bit sick of it). So, this is in the third chapter and it does get a little bit sexual (nothing too raunchy) and violent. Dominique is the vampire and main character, and Joshua is a human. She had always thought of him as an ally, and he thinks of her as a friend. Suddenly, a knock echoed off the door. Even I hadn't seen it coming, and I pouted my lips as the annoyance returned to my stomach. I wasn't in the mood to be disturbed. When I opened the door, Joshua was standing there. My mouth was about to fall open and ask him what the hell he was doing here, when his lips crashed down on mine. At first they were wary, and I’m sure he was certain I would throw him off of me. But I couldn't stop my lips reacting; it had been many years since I they had been this active on another man's. The lust slithered through my body as my hand found the front of his white T-Shirt and grasped it. When Joshua realized I was kissing him in return, he slipped one of his hands around my face, drew his fingers through my hair and clutched strands. His tongue found mine and they danced together, and I felt it trace my angular fangs. Both of my hands came up to his thick arms, grasping them and loving the thick flesh. Resolved Question: Am I any good at story writing ?

Well This is one of my english essays for my coursework and I just wanted to no your opinions really . We had a structure to follow but the rest was up to us and we had to keep it short . I'd like a career in writing so this means alot and sorry for any punctuation/spelling mistakes China Heart - By Kate Elvin What happens when our bodies die? . All I knew was that I was dead inside , rotting like an old wooden dock or rusty railing’s ; my heart was stone cold metal , A thick copper layer of rust; my troubled past suffocated that metallic beating organ , was it still beating ? Or were those beating drums the sound of the ripples of winter’s menacingly icy breath travelling along my bones. I was that frozen winter, cold and hollow and alone. The landscape was a perfect clinical white, Framed by rusty mountains. Pigeons fountained into the air above the silent blanket covered with snow, and as the full moon shone down that snow was covered with millions of iridescent gem stones indented with small glistening pools of light forming in the crinkled white blanket like the ripples in the ocean. The ice burned my tongue like citrus fruits. And the moaning tree’s echoed around my eardrums. The landscape appeared empty against the angry sky. Black as the heart of evil the clouds thundered through the sky. Speckles of gray paint on a dark canvas. I looked through my mind like looking into a burning forest bright white with spiking crimson embers, my eyes traveled through those rust stained mountains and everything seemed worthless. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that’s what the Doctor said he didn’t no me. He didn’t no what I was. My whole life revolved around routine. Everything had to be perfect. My body like the tired arms of a leaf stripped sycamore. My heart was bone china, the days where long and slow because I was so severely fragile. Then I met him. My eyes drawn to the gaping hole upon his ivory cheeks .With his traveler’s eyes and strangers smile, he gave me a future, my future. His features where sharp and prominent in comparison to his chalk face touched by the fingers of a ghost. His skin like cold stone. His eyes black like an ink dipped quill. He told me how he knew me. So many people said how they knew me but something about his eyes the intense look upon his brow told me to trust him. So that’s what I did I let him right into my very soul my china heart. He gave me a vision of the future; I was the leader of a great nation. My complex mind somehow working to help rid this selfish world from famine and poverty. I had so much power, I could change the way the world spun on its axis, I could change those rusty mountains, I could burn that angry sky those thundering clouds. I could change me. more

Voting Question: Can u help me on my hw plz and it is reading questions(4th grade)?

Sound 1) When an airplane zooms above us in the sky, the sound we hear takes several seconds to reach our ears. In other words, we may see an airplane off in the distance a few seconds before the sound of its engine reaches us. This is because sound waves travel through the air from the source of the noise to our ears more slowly than light waves travel from an object to our eyes. 2) When sound travels through air, several things affect the speed at which the sound will travel. If the day is very windy, sound will move slower through the air than on a still day. The temperature of the air also affects the speed of sound will travel. 3) Sound can travel through more than just air. Sound travels well through water. Just sink down in the bathtub until your ears are underwater and you can hear all kinds of sounds. Whales, dolphins, and many other sea animals communicate, or send messages to each other, through the water. 4) Sounds travel about four times faster through water than through the air. However, just as certain things about the air affect the speed of sound travel, several things about the water can make sound travel faster and slower. Water pressure is one such thing. The deeper down in the ocean sound goes, the more pressure there is on the water. The salinity, or amount of salt in the water, also affects the speed of sound. Finally, just as in air, the temperature of water affects sound travel. 6) Sound travels extremely fast through metal. Sound moves approximately fifteen times faster through steel than through the air! 7) A resourcful person can use his knowledge of the speed of sound to figure out how far away a thunderstorm is. Sound travels through the air at roughly 1/5 of a mile per second. The speed of light is far faster. When a bolt of lightning is visible, count the seconds until the thunder that the lightning made is heard. If five seconds transpire before the crack of thinder, the storm is about a mile away. Resolved Question: I need help on the tone of this poem!!?

How would you describe the tone of this poem? (Mushrooms by Margaret Atwood) In this moist season, mist on the lake and thunder afternoons in the distance they ooze up through the earth during the night, like bubbles, like tiny bright red balloons filling with water; a sound below sound, the thumbs of rubber gloves turned softly inside out. In the mornings, there is the leaf mold starred with nipples, with cool white fishgills, leathery purple brains, fist-sized suns dulled to the colors of embers, poisonous moons, pale yellow. Where do they come from? For each thunderstorm that travels overhead there's another storm that moves parallel in the ground. Struck lightning is where they meet. Underfoot there's a cloud of rootlets, shed hairs or a bundle of loose threads blown slowly through the midsoil. These are their flowers, these fingers reaching through darkness to the sky, these eyeblinks that burst and powder the air with spores. They feed in shade, on halfleaves as they return to water, on slowly melting logs, deadwood. They glow in the dark sometimes. They taste of rotten meat or cloves or cooking steak or bruised lips or new snow. It isn't only for food I hunt them but for the hunt and because they smell of death and the waxy skins of the newborn, flesh into earth into flesh. Here is the handful of shadow I have brought back to you: this decay, this hope, this mouth- ful of dirt, this poetry. more

Voting Question: can u help me on my hw plz and it is reading hw(4th grade)?

Resolved Question: Sylvia Browne Predictions for the Next 100 Years.....?

Tell me if you believe, in a hundred years that any of these predictions can happen. If so, which ones do you hope are true? •Eradication of cancer as we know it, using sound waves, photo sensitive drug therapy, and "self-addicting" cells. •Robotic houses, controlled by computerized switchboard. •Electrical cars with flotation ability for water travel to bypass freeways. •Houses made from pressed paper with plastic coatings; interchangeable walls •Separate body parts cloned for organ transplants; not an entire body. •New form of painless tooth extraction, using a type of suction, with immediate replacement of new tooth. •Diagnostic chambers which map the body's electrical balance to predict health problems before the come. •Cylindrical rooms in which people enter to see an automated projection of the clothing and color that would look good on them; select what you want, take your measurements, then two days later pick up the goods. •Third floor of houses have rollback roofs to allow Hovercrafts to come and go. •No more surgery with knives. Some type of molecular ionization device that knows how to take out the afflicted cells then seal the wound without a single scar. •Remolding of the whole face structure, to duplicate any look that you wish. •New exercise equipment that you sit or stand in, and it literally stimulates your muscles with electricity to achieve the same effect as physical exercise. •Babies will be birthed in water all the time, with music, incense, and green and lavender lights. •People will be able to simply "walk out" of their bodies upon death. •There will be no US Presidency; our government will go back to a Greek Senate structure. •No longer a single Pope, but a triumvirate of Popes, each assigned to a geographic collection of Catholics. •Peace in the Middle East will prevail by 2050. •West Coast goes under in 2026. Parts of the East Coast also get inundated. Tsunamis will wipe out a large portion of Japan. •The Hawaiian Islands will have upheaval and be the site of a large new landmass. •Atlantis will begin to show itself by 2023 and be fully visible by 2026. •After 2050, the "Age of the Messiah" is upon us. People turn totally toward Spirituality, peace will rein for a long time. People will return to community living, loving each other, and working together. •Treatment for depression and mood disorders will come from a "control chamber" that emits sensory stimulation gently to the brain, including certain smells, which will elevate mood. •Medicine in pill form goes away; instead we have air-injected delivery through the skin. •Atomic batteries will run cars. •No more gas propelled rockets in space; we will have nuclear powered cylinder shaped objects that travel everywhere. •A moon base is created for people to visit, and as a stopping place for further trips. By 2055 most people will live in domed cities due to poor atmospheric conditions. •A virtual reality headset will stimulate brain waves so people can learn whole libraries of information within hours. •Giant fruits and vegetables will be grown in hothouse environments. The nutrients will be synthesized into a highly condensed injection. •Proteins are developed without animal meat, very powerful, builds immune system. •Addictions will be a thing of the past because of a brain stimulation, which eradicates all addictions, with no side effects •Execution for the death penalty will become a complete vaporization of the body. •No separate governments, one planetary government will form. •Great earth changes will occur and germ warfare will be used before the world finds peace. But eventually from all of the bad comes good. The pendulum will swing back to humanity and love. •No world war is coming, but lots of civil disorder and small skirmishes. No nuclear holocaust. •Peace will last from 2050 until 2100, and then I see nothing beyond, which could mean "the end will come like a thief in the night." •Toward the end of things, the veil separating our world from The Other Side will thin, so much so that most people will see decease loved ones and speak with their Spirit Guides. •There will be many false prophets that rise up proclaiming to be Jesus on Earth, and try to lead people astray. We are already seeing this in the big rise of occultism. •People will again find Spirituality, not so much in organized religion, but in the spiritual brotherhood of coming together and finding their Temple within. •Four more comets will pass by before the end times. •Aliens will begin to show themselves in the year 2010, they will not harm us, they simply want to see what we are doing to this planet. They will teach us how to use anti-gravity devices again, such as they did for the pyramids.I am not saying any of these "predictions" are true. I'm just laying them out to be criticized on their probability. more

Resolved Question: Using aloe vera gel for home fetal doppler probe?

My husband just bought a fetal doppler for us to listen to the heartbeat. Took a little patience (and a full bladder!), but I was able to pick it up (9w 6d)! However, I seem to need a lot of gel to get a clear sound. The booklet suggested using a quarter-sized dab, and with that amount I got a lot of static. (I need about three times that much!) I read somewhere that you can use aloe vera gel instead, since my doppler only came with a 60g bottle of ultrasound gel, and I don't know how fast I'll go through it (since I seem to need so much per test). So anyway, Has anyone here tried using aloe vera gel instead of ultrasound gel? Does it work or is it bunk? If it worked for you, does it matter what kind of gel it is? (My husband has a big bottle of it, but it's not pure aloe vera, and it has little bubbles in it like hair gel, and I do know that ultrasound doesn't travel well through air. Would those air bubbles cause any problems?) Thanks, everyone!Hi, Jill- I was thinking the same thing at first, but I'm positive it was the baby's heart because initially all I could find was my uterine arteries (way too loud and slow to be the baby's), then with a little patience I found the baby's, very low, at 168.Oops, in my last detail I forgot to add that I was familiar with what my uterine arteries sounded like because last week, when the midwife tried to find my baby's heartbeat, she could only find my arteries (I had lotion on, so all she could pick up was static). I also checked clips online to familiarize myself with what the baby's heartbeat should sound like. It was a very low volume sound, but definitely there. more

Voting Question: Is this a good first chapter?

No one truly knows where it started. No one knows how it started. All the worried faces on the television knew was that it had hit hardest in Asia. Two weeks into the disease and all travel abroad had been restricted to government agencies and rich people with second opinions. 3 weeks and over a million infected later, rumors began to circulate that it was something in the blood. A month later, the speculations confirmed, mass roundups were done in a frantic search to find what top analyst were dubbing "The Lifeline", A rare blood type that officials believed contained a possible cure. My name is Helten, I live in Colorado Springs, am 11 years old and in death I can save the world. Here is my story. “Helten get ready” my dad called as he woke me up to go to school. He knocked on my door hard that made me jump to my feet and step on my Xbox headset and “CRACK” it snapped. “Er dad you made me break my head set I said. I picked up the headset and tried to snap it into place “Nope, needs glue” I whispered to myself. I grabbed clothes out of my dresser to get ready but I couldn’t decide Fox or Alpine stars. Grabbing my shirt I went to the bathroom to turn on the hot water, if there was some. I turned the HOT knob to the right as far as it went and felt the water. It was warm. I jumped out of my clothes and into the shower as quick as I possibly could. I washed my hair and my body and jumped out got dressed and went to the kitchen for breakfast. “Good morning Sleeping Beauty” my dad said as I sat on the Mahogany kitchen table. I poured Lucky Charms in a bowl and Milk and walked to the kitchen for a spoon. “: Go comb your hair my mom commanded. Er, why I want to eat breakfast Mom.” My mom was a tall slender lady with red hair that hung down to her shoulder blades and blue-green eyes. “Because I said so now go in their or no Xbox for a week for talking back.” “Err,” I said. The hall to the bathroom was long it stretched though the whole house. When I got there I look in the mirror my hair was a mess. I grabbed a comb and ran it through my tangled bronze hair. I got my hair from my mom my moms natural hair color was like a bronze but she dyes it “ugh” I said to my self as I pulled out many tangle strands. I finished up in the bathroom and walked through the long hallway to the kitchen to eat my breakfast. “That’s a lot better,” my mom said as she kissed my forehead and walked out the door. She was in a rush she was late as it was “What time is it?" I asked as I searched for the clock. “7:30 why do you ask we are waiting for the bus anyway.” Joy said, “I know I was just asking,” I told my sister as I finished up my Lucky Charms. My sister is a short fairy-looking girl that was always sarcastic. She is 13 and my height and weight exactly. She goes to the middle school12 miles from our house Sabin middle school. She was dressing in green and orange for spirit day. Once I finished my breakfast I sat down on our black leather couch and grabbed the remote from the seat beside me, I changed the channel from the news to cartoons. The morning cartoons were the best because they are the old cartoons like TOM & JERRY. When the third mini episode was over I glanced at the clock “ Its 8 o’clock I yelled for Joy to hear and ran out to the bus. The bus ride was long and boring as I stared out the window I began to daydream about my crush if you will. Her long, brown silky, smooth hair that glistened in the sun as she ran toward me. She grabbed me and gave me a huge hug as if I was going away for a long time and I was gasping for air. She let me go and said the words that I was hoping to say to her one day “I love you“ she said with a tone that not even I could describe it was…wonderful like nothing I had ever herd before. But I realized in this “dream” I was taller and about a year or two older and I was crying and I sounded a lot more like a man between sobs as if I was 13 or 14. “Helten!” I herd my friend Jake yell was I opened my eyes I noticed that the bus was empty only Jake and I were on the large vehicle. “Its time to go, you fell asleep on the way I saw you laying down on the seat” “Oh I thought me dream was real for a moment” I told him as grabbed my backpack and stepped out into the aisle. “Were you dreaming about Bella?” he asked in a whisper when we got off the bus. “Yeah how did you know, It was the best dream…” I broke off mid sentence as I stared at her as she walked gracefully to her class. She was about my height. There was a catch though she is a year older. The only reason I saw her everyday was because I was moved up a grade because I was very “advanced for my age” my teacher said in the 5th grade last year.. When she received me I was still in the most advanced reading, math and geography class. Our school was different. We have 4 classes during the day. First we have Reading than Math than we alternated classes during the week like on Monday we would have History anHistory and P.E. and then on Tuesday we would have Science and Geography. Many kids with special education had to take Study Skills instead of Geography or P.E. or any other elective for that matter. “Helten are you that dazed about that girl she is old for you” he said to me as we walked past the building the beautiful girl’s class was in. “I know but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a chance with Bella” I said as I was about 100 meters from my class. When I got there, turmoil boiled in that classroom because of a wreak that caused a lot of traffic over the weekend but I never the news. I had heard about the accident when I passed by students who were gossiping about the but I didn’t see it because e I slept the whole bus ride apparently but I had never herd of such an accident not even on TV. The laser cut off the boys vision and the boy crossed into the median at 90 miles an hour on the freeway into the opposite lane the boy tried to correct the mistake but over corrected.” There was a tear in her eye now. “A car coming down the highway at 80 miles an hour hit the side of the boys car which was spinning at this point hit and the car flipped 50 times crashing into 10 cars on the way.” Her voice was stk well the format changed when i switched it over to answers and er is the only thing my computer would except like uhhh kinda idk but i will work on itstrong and hard now as she cleaned her eyes with a tissue. “There were no less than10 deaths in this crash.” Her voice cracked as she listed the names “Joseph Shelby, Richard Montes, John Smith, Will Anthony, Heather Seamen, Elizabeth Portales, Donald Green-“ she paused trying to catch her breath as she wiped a few more tears. “ The 16 year old boy Edward Cummings and Our principle Margaret Cordova. We are going to give a moment in silence as we flip trough her 16 years here.” She said as she reached over to her laptop computer and started a slideshow. The slideshow played a song unrecognizable to me but I heard some singing along. There were many pictures of Mrs. Cordova in like the 90’s and she looking way different and finally the music stopped and one picture showed and I was the picture of the car she had been in when the car was hit. “ This car wreck was the worst Denver has seen in years” she continued her voice hard now. “Temporarily Mr. Dwendal will be taking over as principprinciple until we find an assistant for behavior affairs” she said and I look around as the students rejoiced silently. Mr. Dwendal was a mean principle if we went to the office he had to get you out with the most intense disipline for unreasonable things. He was now the principle and vice-principle so we can’t rejoice right away I thought to myself . They were dismissing by class and we walke d back to class. more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my prologue? The working title is Element Wars? Options, opinions? I'll take either!?

Prologue A sea of darkness erupted in the night. Churning waves of shadows rolled across the ground leaving death in their wake. Over the pathway they went, sinking into the cobblestones and then back to the surface. They reached the flowerbeds, amass with roses. At their touch, black veins swam through the delicate petals, causing them to wilt and perish. The sea of shadows crept up the side of the mansion, travelling over the mixture of brick and stonework. They were searching for an opening that they could squirm their way into, so they could get what their master was after. Inch after inch they moved, sliding over the leaded windows, but no matter how hard they looked, they could not find an entrance. The squirming mass of shadows flowed onto the roof, wrapping around the multiple chimneys and trying to force their way down them and began their slow descent towards what their master had wanted for all these years… “O expella un sieritas de ni, O expella un sieritas nostos mi,” chanted Lyric Halliway. Sweat dripped from his brow as he spoke the incantation. He couldn’t let them in. Over and over he spoke the words of the Ancients, keeping his eyes on the fireplace. A black tendril stretched down through the chimney, “…Expella un sieritas nostos mi!” A brilliant white light burst from his body, radiating throughout the whole room. The light raced up the tendril and into the mass of shadows. Light cracked and sparked, breaking the shadow into twirling wisps. It spread through the shadows, ending their already short life. It worked its way down the mansion following the trail of darkness that they had left. As it passed through the rose beds, it brought them new life, causing them to bloom and flourish again. Once it reached the end of the pathway it broke off into two separate beams that went in two different directions. They crawled around the mansion—surrounding the perimeter—joining together once more. Shadows flung themselves at the shield, instantly being thrown back. An inhuman scream pierced the night, shaking the already changed leaves from their branches. Animal cries joined in, filling the once quiet air with sounds of anguish. “The protection spell worked,” said Lyric, flicking his hand at the fireplace, the logs within burst into flame. “Of course it worked,” scoffed a feminine voice. He turned to face her, “I knew it would work, but I didn’t picture it working this well, Altaya.” He looked at her; she was about a foot tall, with white gold hair that flowed down her back. She wore a shear white dress that sparkled with diamonds. Intense blue eyes looked back at him. Transparent butterfly wings sprouted from her back, he could just make out tiny silver veins coursing through them. She stood—with her hands cocked on her hips—on his desk. “So what now? She asked leaping into the air, to fly over to Lyric. He felt her land on his shoulder, “I have to face him.” “What!” He expected this type of reaction; it didn’t make it any easier though. He was silent for a while before answering her. In that silence he took in his surroundings, knowing it would be the last time he would see them. The fireplace cracked in its hearth. His mahogany desk was littered with papers covered with his cursive writing. Bookshelves were stuffed with books. His emerald green eyes drifted to the portrait hanging over the fireplace. It was a painting of his late wife Belinda. Her jet black hair was gathered together on top of her head. A thin smile was forever on her fare face. Her hands were on her bulging stomach that held their second child Mathew. But that was a portrait painted nineteen years ago. Since then the thing that had brought the shadows had killed her. “Lyric?” “It’s the only way, Altaya. I must face him…weaken him.” “You know you can’t defeat him, he’s to powerful.” Altaya took off from his shoulder to hover in front of Lyric’s face. His eyes swam with glistening tears that refused to leak out. Thinning silver hair was plastered to his forehead with sweat. His gold button up shirt was crinkled and part of it was un-tucked from his brown trousers. “I know I can’t, but I know that I can stop him for at least a while.” “Fine, then I will go with you. I have served you my whole life and I won’t stop now!” “No!” His voice rose in octave, “you must stay here, protect the mansion…protect The Grimoire. You must wait for those prophesized, Altaya. Teach them how to use magic, how to use their gifts. Do you understand me?” “Yes,” he voice was faint, she didn’t want to let him go, she loved him. She had always loved him. She swallowed back a sob, “I understand.” He walked out of the study, his footsteps faint. He trotted down the stairs, into the foyer and to the front door. He turned to Altaya once again, “goodbye old friend, you have always been there for me, it’s time for me to be there for you. And remember you can not tell them about magic they must findHere is the rest of it! it on their own.” With that he spun on his heels and marched through the front door. Altaya zoomed back upstairs and into the study, plastering her self to the window. She watched wide-eyed as Lyric stepped through the magical barrier and the shadows converged on him. She held her breath—she didn’t know for how long—until an explosion rocked the mansion. A mushroom cloud formed of pure white light rocketed into the air. Trees along the entire property were ripped from the ground; animals became nothing more than ash. Windows all along the mansion spider webbed and splintered. They exploded inward, sending her corkscrewing into the wall. Tears spilled from her eyes, freezing as they hit the ground. more

Resolved Question: Physics question for you intelligent Christians and Atheists only!?

I was just pondering wave propagation when it got me to thinking about the outdated "Ether" theory that stated even empty space contains or is comprised of an unknown material, energy, or some unique undiscovered force of physics... This is generally no longer accepted in mainstream academic groups, but I was beginning to wonder if there wasn't something to it... Listen to my argument. All waves MUST have a medium in which to propagate, like sound waves... Sound waves are created by differences in air pressure, where air is the medium for the pressure waves to travel through. Hence why there is no sound in space or in a vacuum. Sound waves can also travel through solids and liquids to varying degrees... I know sound and Electromagnetic waves are not the same, but they work in principally the same fashion... there is a transmission of a wave that disturbs the medium... However, electromagnetic waves can travel in absence of physical matter deep in space... how is this possible!? Isn't there something "in" empty space itself that allows EM waves to travel throughout the universe in the first place? I'm just curious... and if I have any of the facts wrong so far then please feel free to correct me. I do not claim to be right, just curious... Hopefully this makes enough sense to comprehend, sometimes I'm bad about conveying my thoughts...It just makes no sense if there isn't something in space that allows the EM spectrum to function as it does... Otherwise it'd be like throwing a rock into a pond without causing any ripples...Rev. Wing Wang.... I thought that was already implied when I said electromagnetic waves travel in deep space... thanx for restating the obvious...What I'm saying is that I think we (as in the science community) have missed something... of course light travels in space... but why? How is it able to do so, because technically, it shouldn't be able to... more

Resolved Question: What do you think about Sylvia Browne's 40 predictions for the next 100 years?

1. Eradication of cancer as we know it, using sound waves, photo sensitive drug therapy, and "self-addicting" cells. 2. Robotic houses, controlled by computerized switchboard. 3. Electrical cars with flotation ability for water travel to bypass freeways. 4. Houses made from pressed paper with plastic coatings; interchangeable walls 5. Separate body parts cloned for organ transplants; not an entire body. 6. New form of painless tooth extraction, using a type of suction, with immediate replacement of new tooth. 7. Diagnostic chambers which map the body's electrical balance to predict health problems before the come. 8. Cylindrical rooms in which people enter to see an automated projection of the clothing and color that would look good on them; select what you want, take your measurements, then two days later pick up the goods. 9. Third floor of houses have rollback roofs to allow Hovercrafts to come and go. 10. No more surgery with knives. Some type of molecular ionization device that knows how to take out the afflicted cells then seal the wound without a single scar. 11. Remolding of the whole face structure, to duplicate any look that you wish. 12. New exercise equipment that you sit or stand in, and it literally stimulates your muscles with electricity to achieve the same effect as physical exercise. 13. Babies will be birthed in water all the time, with music, incense, and green and lavender lights. 14. People will be able to simply "walk out" of their bodies upon death. 15. There will be no US Presidency; our government will go back to a Greek Senate structure. 16. No longer a single Pope, but a triumvirate of Popes, each assigned to a geographic collection of Catholics. 17. Peace in the Middle East will prevail by 2050. 18. West Coast goes under in 2026. Parts of the East Coast also get inundated. Tsunamis will wipe out a large portion of Japan. The Hawaiian Islands will have upheaval and be the site of a large new landmass. 19. Atlantis will begin to show itself by 2023 and be fully visible by 2026. 20. After 2050, the "Age of the Messiah" is upon us. People turn totally toward Spirituality, peace will rein for a long time. People will return to community living, loving each other, and working together. 21. Treatment for depression and mood disorders will come from a "control chamber" that emits sensory stimulation gently to the brain, including certain smells, which will elevate mood. 22. Medicine in pill form goes away; instead we have air-injected delivery through the skin. 23. Atomic batteries will run cars. 24. No more gas propelled rockets in space; we will have nuclear powered cylinder shaped objects that travel everywhere. 25. A moon base is created for people to visit, and as a stopping place for further trips. 26. By 2055 most people will live in domed cities due to poor atmospheric conditions. 27. A virtual reality headset will stimulate brain waves so people can learn whole libraries of information within hours. 28. Giant fruits and vegetables will be grown in hothouse environments. The nutrients will be synthesized into a highly condensed injection. 29. Proteins are developed without animal meat, very powerful, builds immune system. 30. Addictions will be a thing of the past because of a brain stimulation, which eradicates all addictions, with no side effects. 31. Execution for the death penalty will become a complete vaporization of the body. 32. No separate governments, one planetary government will form. 33. Great earth changes will occur and germ warfare will be used before the world finds peace. But eventually from all of the bad comes good. The pendulum will swing back to humanity and love. 34. No world war is coming, but lots of civil disorder and small skirmishes. No nuclear holocaust. 35. Peace will last from 2050 until 2100, and then I see nothing beyond, which could mean "the end will come like a thief in the night." 36. Toward the end of things, the veil separating our world from The Other Side will thin, so much so that most people will see decease loved ones and speak with their Spirit Guides. 37. There will be many false prophets that rise up proclaiming to be Jesus on Earth, and try to lead people astray. We are already seeing this in the big rise of occultism. 38. People will again find Spirituality, not so much in organized religion, but in the spiritual brotherhood of coming together and finding their Temple within. 39. Four more comets will pass by before the end times. 40. Aliens will begin to show themselves in the year 2010, they will not harm us, they simply want to see what we are doing to this planet. They will teach us how to use anti-gravity devices again, such as they did for the pyramids. more

Resolved Question: I am the best writer?

The alarm came sounding out of control, disrupting Josh’s perfect sleep in an uncanny matter of a loud ringing noise. The bed spreads came off him, being flocked around on the ground like a loose wet whip. He hurried down the stairs to the right running into the bathroom and closing the door rapidly, turning and locking the knob in place. “Almost there,” Josh said zipping up his pants. The corridor on the left was lid up brightly, each gleaming from the frames on the wall, he liked it. He passed through the hallway looking jiffy and entering the kitchen wearing his pajamas. His mother looked at him holding a frying pan. “What are you still doing in your nightgown?” His mother gazed heavily at him. “You have school today!” Josh stopped chewing his toast and stared at her. “Today’s Saturday,” He said chewing once more at his toast. She opened her mouth surprisingly, her jaw hanging from her mouth. Josh grinned forcefully, the gums from his mouth showed entirely. Spotting the calendar on the fridge, she pointed at today’s date and laughed. “You were right,” She kept laughing. Josh finished his toast and drank his milk and left to the bathroom, drawing a bath of water. It had fallen to him that he had forgotten to stop the annoying alarm that had waked him up in the first place. The bath water sank low as Josh rose up; he took a towel from the rack and started rubbing himself dry. The door knob twisted, he went up to his bedroom and turned off the irritating sound buzzing in his ear. Glancing from the alarm clock to the window, Josh saw a small figure emerge from a pile of leaves that his dad had racked yesterday afternoon, it eyes were blue with pointy ears and a very small snout. It wore what looked like a space suit, holding a thin girdle in its hands. “What is that?” He kept staring at the blue-eyed creature, it twitched for a split second then lifted its eyes and head upward were josh was at. It looked back at its girdle and switched on a knob, and then in an instant, the blue-eyed creature vanished into thin air. “Hello!” Josh turned his head, shaking in his shoes and looking very frightened. The blue-eyed creature sat on Josh’s unraveled bed staring back at him. “Hello again!” The creature said lifting himself up by his webbed feet. “W-w-what are you?” Josh asked stuttering. “I’m Vieux please to meet you!” Josh kept steady, both staring into each other’s eyes and not making a sound. “W-what are you doing here?” “I’m here to deliver an urgent message from the Ministry Of Space Travel. Are you willing to accept it?” Vieux began wrapping the girdle around his waist. “Ok, I guess, sure,” He began feeling calmer and calmer by the minute. Vieux then handed Josh a black sphere ball. “How do I use this?” Josh looked up but Vieux was gone and out of sight. The black ball fit firmly in his sweaty hands, almost slipping out. In then in a sudden, the black ball shook rapidly; it slipped out of his hands and onto the floor and burst spontaneously. The sound of the blast was heard through the walls and corridors of the house, his mother heard it and called out to him. “JOSH, WHAT WAS THAT?” She said bellowing from the kitchen sink. “Nothing mom,” Blue smoke rose from the burst spot and started forming together in the hub of his bedroom, a face similar to Vieux’s shown at the smoke and began speaking. more

Voting Question: how does light travel from space to us?

if space is a vacuum (effectively), then how does light travel to earth if there's physically nothing for it to pass through? i know light is either/both of 'packets' of photons or a wave, but irregardless to that surely it needs a medium to travel through (like sound through air/water) to be able to be percieved at the recieving end, in this case, our eyes? more

Resolved Question: what do you think:chapter 1...?

i'm not sure what the book will be called but here's the first chap. Of Life and Death Erwyn reclined against the white-wash cottage that he called home. He breathed in the last fragrance of summer that seemed to be drifting further away. Carrying the scent of lilacs and wild roses, the breeze gently tugged at the dark ringlets lain above Erwyn’s midnight brow. This crowned eyes of a magnificent blue, brighter than even the sky itself. Standing, Erwyn placed his hands at the small of his back; the one spot that endured the most ware throughout the day. Turning to face the sunset, he looked upon the distant mountains and valleys that rose and fell along the horizon. “Someday,” whispered Erwyn. “someday I’ll travel those mountains as knight and tame the inhabitants that claim such power over them.” How can something so peaceful looking, harbor such wicked foes of man? He wondered. Erwyn pivoted toward the front of the house, lead by the aroma of seasoned beacon and stewed vegetables. As he walked, he caught sight of a strange black cloud out of the corner of his eye. The object loomed above the same mountains he had looked upon just moments before. Growing in size as it approached, Erwyn’s mind returned to the talk of a wild beast of the sky that plagued the lands. Such talk was spread by most of the villagers. The farm boy sped toward the door with, what seemed to him as, inhuman speed. Erwyn launched through the door and desperately searched for his father’s questioning gaze. As he recounted his tale of the darkened silhouette that was rapidly approaching, Erwyn’s mother frantically ripped at the sleeve of her beloved. He freed himself of his wife’s grasp and placed his hands on Erwyn’s shoulders. “We need to be strong for your other and sister.” He explained. “ Go to your room, grab your bow, and help me get the women to the cellar.” As instructed, Erwyn returned, bow in hand. He followed as his family fled for the only place that would offer them safety. Tearing his gaze from the cellar and his loved ones, Erwyn lifted his eyes to the heavens where the beast of the air slithered through the atmosphere. As it flew, it spit pillars of smoke and fire that crumbled to the ground, devouring everything in it’s path. Black talons and teeth flashing, the beast tore at homes and fields, leaving all in ruin. Flicking his gaze back to his kin, and their persuit, Erwyn’s foot caught, and the ground entered his line of vision. Suddenly, all went black, with the last sounds her heard being a chorus ofdesperate screams of both mother and sister. Then: nothing. In the darkness of his mind he fought for the last of his conscience. As a dreaded coma enveloped him, one word continued to echo; “No!…” more

Resolved Question: How are sound waves and radio waves related?

Ok. So I know visible light and radio waves are part of the electromagnetic spectrum. But when you talk of frequency and such I'm thinking about sound. Like sound waves, aren't radio waves just vibrations as well? If so, why do they not need a medium to travel through? Is energy stored in the wave and also acts as matter at the same time? I never ever really thought about it until now. Sound waves produced by vibrations through the air or another medium, correct? Radio waves produced by vibrations through an antenna, correct? Am I wrong? What's up? more

Resolved Question: do you like that poem?? It's my favorite :D please read it all !!?

A spring evening. A large room in an old house. A woman of a certain age, dressed in black, is speaking to a young man. They have not turned on the lights. Through both windows the moonlight shines relentlessly. I forgot to mention that the Woman in Black has published two or three interesting volume of poetry with a religious flavor. So, the Woman in Black is speaking to the Young Man: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Let me come with you. What a moon there is tonight! The moon is kind – it won’t show that my hair turned white. The moon will turn my hair to gold again. You wouldn’t understand. Let me come with you. When there’s a moon the shadows in the house grow larger, invisible hands draw the curtains, a ghostly finger writes forgotten words in the dust on the piano – I don’t want to hear them. Hush. Let me come with you a little farther down, as far as the brickyard wall, to the point where the road turns and the city appears concrete and airy, whitewashed with moonlight, so indifferent and insubstantial so positive, like metaphysics, that finally you can believe you exist and do not exist, that you never existed, that time with its destruction never existed. Let me come with you. We’ll sit for a little on the low wall, up on the hill, and as the spring breeze blows around us perhaps we’ll even imagine that we are flying, because, often, and now especially, I hear the sound of my own dress like the sound of two powerful wings opening and closing, you feel the tight mesh of your throat, your ribs, your flesh, and when you enclose yourself within the sound of that flight you feel the tight mesh of your throat, your birds, your flesh, and thus constricted amid the muscles of the azure air, amid the strong nerves of the heavens, it makes no difference whether you go or return it makes no difference whether you go or return and it makes no difference that my hair has turned white (that is not my sorrow – my sorrow is that my heart too does not turn white). Let me come with you. I know that each one of us travels to love alone, alone to faith and to death. I know it. I’ve tried it. It doesn’t help. Let me come with you. This house is haunted, it preys on me – what I mean is, it has aged a great deal, the nails are working loose, the portraits drop as though plunging into the void, the plaster falls without a sound as the dead man’s hat falls from the peg in the dark hallway as the worn woolen glove falls from the knee of silence or as moonbeam falls on the old, gutted armchair. Once it too was new – not the photograph that you are starting at so dubiously – I mean the armchair, very comfortable, you could sit in it for hours with your eyes closed and dream whatever came into your head – a sandy beach, smooth, wet, shining in the moonlight, shining more than my old patent leather shoes that I send each month to the shoeshine shop on the corner, or a fishing boat’s sail that sinks to the bottom rocked by its own breathing, a three-cornered sail like a handkerchief folded slantwise in half only as though it had nothing to shut up or hold fast no reason to flutter open in farewell. I have always has a passion for handkerchiefs, not to keep anything tied in them, no flower seeds or camomile gathered in the fields at sunset, nor to tie them with four knots like the caps the workers wear on the construction site across the street, nor to dab my eyes – I’ve kept my eyesight good; I’ve never worn glasses. A harmless idiosyncracy, handkerchiefs. Now I fold them in quarters, in eighths, in sixteenths to keep my fingers occupied. And now I remember that this is how I counted the music when I went to the Odeion with a blue pinafore and a white collar, with two blond braids – 8,16,32,64 – hand in hand with a small friend of mine, peachy, all light and picked flowers, (forgive me such digressions – a bad habit) – 32, 64 – and my family rested great hopes on my musical talent. But I was telling you about the armchair – gutted – the rusted springs are showing, the stuffing – I thought of sending it next door to the furniture shop, but where’s the time and the money and the inclination – what to fix first? I thought of throwing a sheet over it – I was afraid of a white sheet in so much moonlight. People sat here who dreamed great dreams, as you do and I too. and now they rest under earth untroubled by rain or the moon. Let me come with you. We’ll pause for a little at the top of St. Nicholas’ marble steps, and afterward you’ll descend and I will turn back, having on my left side the warmth from a casual touch of your jacket and some squares of light, too, from small neighborhood windows and this pure white mist from the moon, like a great procession of silver swans – and I do not fear this manifestation, for at another time on many spring evenings I talked with God who appeare more

Resolved Question: I am writing a fantasy series and I want to know if this sounds like an interesting beginning.?

Ok so the series I am writing is a fantasy series and it has a lot of twists and turns in it. Daveigh starts out in Tennessee and then she finds out that she is a witch and she travels to a different dimension to fight an evil sorcoress (spelling?) that she was destined to defeat. The sorcoress tried to steal her powers when she was a baby but Daveigh ended up taking her powers instead, so the sorcoress is trying to get her powers back. All of it, of course, will get explained throughout the series, but this is just how I am starting it. I want to know if you find it interesting. If you do, and you want me to post the rest of my chapters and what not on here I will and you all can help me improve my writing!=) It seemed strange that a night in the start of August could be so cold. The air was still, as if everyone in the small town in Tennessee were holding their breath, waiting for the moment that Daveigh was hoping to stop. Ignoring the excruciating pain in her side, she continued to run along the deserted street. The only light came from the crescent moon above, getting hidden out of sight every once in a while as a misty cloud drifted over it, and the flickering porch light that marked her destination. She wanted to stop; she wanted to believe that nothing was really happening. But deep in her heart, ever since her 14th birthday, she knew that nothing would be normal anymore. The porch light drew closer and she could make out the familiar blood red door of her cottage: It was open. She ran faster and her heart beat with both fear and because she had been sprinting for two miles without stopping. She finally stopped and caught her breath when she reached the door. Taking a deep breath she walked bravely inside. The inside of her cottage was dark and silent. She flipped on the light and saw that everything looked the same, as if no one had been inside. She looked at the wall and saw her parents happy faces looking back at her. That was her favorite picture in the whole house: The picture of her parents the day they had adopted her. Tears filled in her eyes as she crept silently down the hallway. Why am I bothering? She thought. It’s too late. Despite her feelings of hopelessness, she called out, “Mom? Dad?” Her voice seemed to echo through the tense air, but there was no response. Her body shook as she remembered exactly what she had seen in her dream. She stopped at the first door on the right. Peering inside, she saw a messy room with clothes strewn all across the floor, papers flooding her desk and the floor around it, and a jumbled heap of blankets on top of her bed. Normally this wouldn’t be a surprise, only she had just cleaned her room that morning on her mother’s orders. Someone had obviously been looking for something… She hurried farther down the hallway, stopping at the last door on the left. Her heart missed a beat as she thought about what she could possibly be walking inside to find. Taking a deep, calming breath she opened the door. Taking one look at her parents, she screamed a loud, high pitched scream. Her father’s face looked terrified, his mouth open as if he were still trying to scream. Her mother’s hazel eyes were pleading, her cheeks stained with tears. Her hand was intertwined with her husband’s. Daveigh sunk to her knees, crying into her hands, unable to look at the horrific scene any longer. She saw car lights shine in through the window through the open gaps in between her fingers. She heard hurried footsteps down the hall, but she sat on the floor, unable to move, unable to think. “Daveigh,” a family friend and police officer, Dale, began. He stopped dead in his tracks when he glanced up at the bed where his two friends lay, dead. “Oh my God! What happened?” Tears filled in his eyes. Daveigh looked up into the officer’s eyes. All she could get out was a coarse whisper, “Why are they doing this to me?”Daveigh is pronounced "Duh-vay"Oh, and by the way, I am, in any way, shape, or form, NOT giving anyone permission to copy my work! This work is completely and totally mine. I plan on trying to get it published and if anyone uses any of this I WILL sue. more

Resolved Question: Help with my story please? I just need the continuing sentence?

The first thing she became aware of was the air. The stale, musty type that choked the lungs and filled the breather's head with images of death. She had been too long. It was rare that she was late to such an occasion, and as a consequence, the air was already changing. It flowed through the village from the south, inhabiting the lungs of every man, woman and child that stood in its way. That included 15 year old Kyanne, who had been unconscious for the past 7 days. It burnt her throat as it forced it's way around her body, shocking her back into reality and breaking her fever. She gasped and bolted upright, clawing at her neck desperately to put out the fire. She was immediately pinned down by a pair of strong arms who held her to the bed as she writhed helplessly in agony, blood pounding furiously in her head and making it impossible for her to see anything clearly. Through the turmoil that was her mind at that moment came a voice, speaking clearly and without accent. "Kyanne, calm down" the voice demanded, sounding slightly irritated. She continued to thrash around, regardless, her frail body convulsing against the thin mattress. She could hear someone crying broken sobs from nearby. “She’s hysterical. Her body’s going into shock” The methodical voice continued, explaining to an unseen bystander. It was then Kyanne realised that the strangled cries were coming from her, and struggled to regain control of them. “Good” the voice murmured approvingly, as she trailed off into quiet whimpers. Liquid was poured down her throat and the fire receded slightly, leaving only a choking sensation. Kyanne tried to put this out of her mind, and concentrated on her breathing. She no longer felt the burning, but was exhausted, and didn't have the strength to continue to resist the pair of hands pressing down on her shoulders, and so reluctantly seized, feeling light-headed. The burn was now a dull throb and easier to cope with. A new voice joined in the heavy silence, a recognisable voice that sounded significantly worried. " Kay, are you alright?" Kyanne's older brother, James, asked, placing his cool hand on her forehead to check her temperature. Kyanne’s eyes flickered open as he spoke, content at least to be with someone familiar. Yet she frowned as she considered speaking to make sure her vocal cords hadn't been damaged. She didn't really want to try unless it was unavoidable: the rawness at the back of her throat was not completely ignorable. However, she didn't want to frighten her brother, so she opened her mouth and carefully began her sentence "I-" She winced readily, waiting for the pain to follow, but instead felt numbness. It wasn't a specifically unpleasant feeling. Actually, she reasoned with herself, it was quite soothing. "I-I feel...fine." She allowed her faint Russian accent to linger on the last word. Kyanne had travelled to England with her family shortly after developing speech, but her accent had never completely faded. This had always irritated her brother: just days after moving, he himself had picked up the dialect and way of speaking and was using it fluently. It annoyed him that his younger sister could not do the same. Thus, she weighed up his reaction to her pronunciation to decide how ill she had previously been. He had definitely noticed: he cringed slightly, but continued to check her temperature without complaint or comment. What next?! I just need the sentence to follow this up please :)Ohh, it's not a concluding sentence! It's because I have writer's block and I just need the start of a sentence to help carry on. It would be kind of confusing if it was a concluding sentence =]Besides, I am 14... more

Resolved Question: In the past 6 decades do you think anyone from Russia or the US tried to figure out how to win a nuclear war?

Atomic weapons --- they were by comparison to today's mega weapons fairly small -- one US official referred to the bombs dropped on Japan as "little toy weapons" compared today --One of these toy bombs leveled 4 miles in diameter The Russians and others have come up with a vacuum bomb -- "The daddy of all bombs" as their papers put it ---- All the boom with none of the radiation Plus the speed factors have multiplied by a thousand -- A plane carrying an atomic bomb to drop over a target and run like hell --- is just an out of date concept --- It is as gone as the vinyl records and rotary phones 2,500 tests that we know of have been conducted -- ( The US admits to 1000 and the Russians admit to the other 1000 --- the 500 make up France Britain India and a handful of others --- many of these were conducted in cooperation with the US -- so stats may be misleading) Missles can no travel at twice the speed of sound ,the speed of sound through the standard atmosphere is 761 mph Now there is space --- yep -- you can orbit a bomb and drop it on anything anywhere --- or just simply explode it in the air 6 miles up in legal no mans land -- And take out an entire national electric grid -- Any military sites which are not covered by a Faraday cage will be fried and unusable -- --------------------------------- Yet with all of these complexities -- ---- It is really this simple --- I need to get my punch in before you get a chance to react and I need to knock you out so you can't punch me back --- ------------------ Now that part --- at least hasn't changed since man discovered the pointy stick --------------------------------- In the past 6 decades do you think anyone from Russia or the US tried to figure out how to win a nuclear war The Pentagon --- the Kremlin --- the Chinese --- any one else with a nuclear weapon -- Has anyone ever said -- Hey you guys -- figure out how we can win a nuclear war ? Or did they just all give up and say can't be done ? Am I really supposed to believe that?hayesatlbch I agree -- but to play devils advocate How good would those subs be with no command structure ? Who would they attack and with no communication how would they know the mainland had been attacked ? more
