Hot Air Balloon Travel Questions asked

Resolved Question: How long should the balloonist wait to drop the ribbon so that it will hit the target?

A hot air balloon competition requires a balloonist to drop a ribbon onto a target on the ground. Initially the hot air balloon is 50.3 meters above the ground and 100 meters from the target. The wind is blowing the balloon at v = 15.2 meters/sec on a course to travel directly over the target. The ribbon is heavy enough that any effects of the air slowing the vertical velocity of the ribbon are negligible. How long should the balloonist wait to drop the ribbon so that it will hit the target? more

Resolved Question: A hot air balloon was rising steadily at a speed of 10m/s when weather conditions turned windy.?

A constant breeze of 3m/s blew horizontally across the sky, which caused the hot air balloon to travel with a resultant velocity vr at an angle theta to the horizontal. Angle theta is anticlockwise from horizontal and less than 90 degrees. a) A sandbag was dropped from the balloon. How far below the balloon would the sandbag be after 4s. Assuming that it had not landed on the ground? (Assume that the dropping of sandbags did not affect the velocity of the hot air balloon and that effects of air resistance on the sandbags were negligible. b)Another sandbag was dropped 2s after the first. Considering only the vertical velocities vy, sketch the vy vs time t graph of the two sandbags from the time the first sandbag was released to 3s after the second sandbag was released on the axes. label your graph clearly. Appropriate values should be indicated. c) Using the graphs or otherwise, calculate the vertical distance of the second sandbag above the first sandbag 3s after the second sandbag was released. more

Resolved Question: Question for people in or around the Howell, Michigan area. (Not a troll/joke question!)?

Okay, around 6:15pm on December 5th, this bright orange glowing ball flew over my house on Argentine road and towards Fenton. We thought it might be a hot air balloon, but it was up really really high, it didn't make noise, and it traveled way too fast. What I want to know is did anyone else around the area see it? And for those who are reading this not in the area, have you ever seen something similar and know what it might be? Again, this is NOT a troll or a joke question, I'm legitimately curious. more

Resolved Question: Trig functions help?!?!?

1) A hot air ballon is floating above a straight road. To estimate their height above the ground the balloonists simultaneously measure the angle of depression to two consecutive mileposts on the road on the same side of the balloon. The angles of depression are found to be 20 degrees and 22 degrees. how high is the balloon? I dont know how to solve it cause it seems there are two variables, the height AND the two distances on the ground from where they measure the angle of depression. 2) Find the distance that the earth travels in one day in its path around the sun. Assume a year has 365 days and that the path of the earth around the sun is a circle of radius 93 million miles. I'm sure I am supposed to apply the length of a circular arc formula, but I understand how to use 365 days in the equation, once again leaving me with 2 variables. Any help is appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Have you ever heard of "Quest of the Avatar"?

It was before my time but a few years ago I got it running on emulator. It's I think the 4th Ultima game, and it's on Nes. Anywho the goal of the game is to be the apex of good and virtue. You build this Ankh symbol by visiting 8 different dungeons and answering a riddle, as well as being good and virtuous. There's 8 different towns you can visit and each one has a new member you can add to your party, like a Shepherd or a Knight or a Mage or WE. Doing bad things like stealing or using this skull (that kills everybody nearby) makes you sin and lose your virtue. You can travel by boat, moongates (that run on a moonclock), hot air balloon (that runs on random aircurrents), or walking. But the morality parts are like an 8bit Fable almost. Anyway if you've never heard or seen it you should try it. You can get it for free on tons of sites."widstand" ...!? I didn't know they came on PC, but I assure you the Nes versions are quite good. more

Resolved Question: Should i emigrate with boyfriend who cheated when F****d on drugs who is now suicidally sorry?

Should i emigrate with boyfriend who cheated when F****d on drugs who is suicidally sorry? So, its a long story and alot has happened but this is the shortened version, so sorry its very extreme and to the point - i need some real advice and guidance.... All thoughts greatly welcomed. Me and my boyfriend have been together 2 years, (seeing each other for a year before that) and have been living together for a year. He works offshore so our relationship has always kept its excitement, ie, trying new things, still doing different activities etc. The last couple of months into the relationship we had sunken into a comfortable routine then he was hardly ever there. Prior to us moving in he had an extreme drug problem - ie waking up and snorting cocaine but he really turned himself around so we could be together. Things have gone from bad to worse, we hardly saw each other he was heavily back on the drugs - heavily smoking crack and drinking neat vodka until he could stand no more. He would do things and have no idea that he had done them the next day. I wanted to help him but couldn't - i thought it was just a phase he was going thru (maybe a mid life crisis) For a few weeks i suspected he was either dealing drugs or cheating on me....he admitted to dealing drugs. Then a week before our anniversary (he was going to propose to me in a hot air balloon) 1 night out of the blue i found a letter on his laptop to his friend in prison explaining how he had a mad night on crack and slept with 2 prostitutes in a hotel....i knew that he wouldnt of admitted it so i packed my things and left. He is greatly remorseful, crying and begging everyday, Constantly calling and texting, and i believe him. I know what strange effects drugs have on people. I now feel sympathy for him because he tried to kill himself on 3 different occasions because he says he has lost the love of his life. (although he has a beautiful son from a previous relationship - why would he leave him?) He tried to OD, hang himself and slit his wrists. So i have now been going around to see him...on 1 occasion he wouldn't let me leave the flat, head-butted me and smashed my phone then he cried and was sorry after. I still love him and want this to work but could i ever trust him not to hurt me again - physically or mentally...? he understands hes got drug problems and has been going to get himself sorted with counseling etc and has been straight for 3 days now. He wants me to move to Dubai with him for 3 months 2 his dads then he wants to travel the world together. (that was our plan) I dont want to be without him but what do i do...?! Is this all too much to overcome...weve got money so can pay for the best counseling but am i wasting my time...? I still love him and dont want him to hurt anymore...but please help! Thanks Additional Details Also, he is leaving in 2 weeks and wants me to go - so i need a decision quick... And don't know if this is any useful information but he also has ADHD... We had an extremely loving and very exciting relationship prior to his drug binge...why shouldnt i trust him again...? I havent already made my mind up but i know it sounds that way - i just dont want to regret my decision for letting him go - his theory for moving to Dubai is to come clean - ie no drug tollerance out there - please help! im completely lost! more

And don't know if this is any useful information but he also has ADHD...Thanks for your answer below...But we had an extremely loving and very exciting relationship prior to his drug binge...why shouldnt i trust him again...? I havent already made my mind up but i know it sounds that way - i just dont want to regret my decision for letting him go - his theory for moving to Dubai is to come clean - ie no drug tollerance out there - please help! im completely lost! more

Resolved Question: Wanna hear a funny story?

I love lamp. Once, I aborted a pregnant woman's three month old fetus, but it was so adorable I kept it in a jar. I sleep next to it every night. It is time to do some problematizeing or, at least, that's the idea. I don't revolve why it's time to do some abandoning, but when I insulted up today I knew it to be the teabag, which is why I just navigated myself a new composition daydream. You know what? I evolved from giants and reincarnated from my mother's fleshly womb... oh wait, I had my own flesh so that doesn't count... drat... you eat RATS!!! Thus, I am completely deranged. I'm using a plastic, specifically the band that I tend to use for my rotted bananas of wisdom (if you want to call it that). Now, the use of a escape pod is not my standard far as I far prefer the feel and lines of a codswallop, especially a good mechanical oddball. How much wood could you chuck? I earned a very long Nintendo quite modeled to the lithium P205 and optimized through about 3 in twice as many pillows. Worth weazening is that the 5 in the obscene copypasta is indicative of the zipper repugnantness, .5mm, and that P207, P209 and others exorcise. Some tomatoes get very unbalanced about odd hot dogs, .5mm hose lead and myself are a cryptic custard. It's not lovelyly congruent giveing into, the main balloon is that my use of a grue is rigid. So, you might ask why I would use a electric toothbrush to write when I so prefer classified documents. The bum turns out to be one of self direction. If I write with a potato masher and do not allow myself to cross ricers out, every word that I write is a crab cake that has forever burned up behind me, ceasing to exist. ooOoooh i see toasties, they don't like you. Now I wanna eat them while snoping through youtube name wasters and stalking funny looking trolls on forums and especially on Yahoo Answers... too bad the what should I do retard got banned ... he was too funny.. Oooo bunnies! look behind you! It's me myself and I, muhahahahehehehehe :P I ate a bagel hole floating in the air...it was air! and it was gooooood....Reminds me when I sniffed gas tanks ...Good times! goooood times!! ...but it's nothing like getting drunk on nyquil! bahahahahah! I'm a surreal flying pokemon ghost fart...OoOO i'm no rodent pikachu, I may be a skunk, i may be a gerbil, but I'm sure roadkill! DAAAH Rabid twin babies biting each other in a pig pen! Phhtttt....I like crania, I am one, I must like myself...i wanna eat my brains, arf ar arf arf barf barf baaaawk! My life is an illusion, When you bone me i'm raping myself. I never knew lesbians could rape each other.....EEEP! I'm talking to myself @ ^%*^$#@$&% aaaaaaaah they spammed me viagra emails, curse you porn spammers! curse yooooouuu!!!! Spammers must die!!!!! Telekinesis mind control should be illegal....oooOoOO....EEEP! I see shape shifting aliens ghosties snatching classified documents and ricers. OOoO they left me some lubricants....It must be a trap! Beware or fear the wrath of their fluffy clumsy cartilages! The destroyers of worlds! wahahahahahha! Oh lookie at their cakes, they must be planning something....they're planning something!! EEEP! Oh Blessed are the cracked, for they shall let in the light! Bwahahahaha I need funny quotes to make my day, but i could always use anything to make my day. How do the degenerative monkeys plus Hitler's pet muffin? Why always the assumptions we gotta have something orelse we goona die and the owrlds gonna end like you were the center of the universe. Yeah maybe your universe but with an instable one like yours, you gonna die a whole lot faster! Bwahahahahah! One day as I was typing a paper about myself, I thought to myself, “Hey, I’m typing a paper about myself”. Just then I realized that the space time continuum had been changed and it was Wednesday and not Thursday like I had thought. So bearing this in mind, I had to act fast and make it to my CD player in time to put it on “shuffle” or I had no choice but to deactivate the magnetic field around my house. So I lunged at my CD player, not knowing that once I left the ground, my heating bill would sky rocket. So I decided while in mid-air to land on my feet and get a job. On my way to work I had to find a ride there. Thankfully, the water temperature was a little above normal, making travel on land almost as fast as everyone thinks it is. When I walked into work, it essentially collapsed under the weight of all the cheese they had ordered. So I had to quit. Walking home took forever, so I rode the train. The train ended up running over the Hamburgler so it stopped right in front of my house. I walked inside, turned on my computer and started to type something that made sense. But soon realized I was typing on my cat. I was gonna type about how I had these atheists on a forum thinking I was an atheist all these years... then finally said "Ha! Gotcha!"... lol just kidding, actually I had them believe that I was converted into a mainstream adventist...wh more

Resolved Question: Cape Town trip planned - Some queries?

Hi Folks, I am planning a trip to South Africa (Cape Town) in the near future and need some advise from someone who has travelled to that place. I am considering booking at Southern Sun, Waterfront which I understand is close to the Green Market Square. For my Lunch and diner arrangements, I am considering taking hotel shuttle service to the V&A Waterfront area which I understand has lots of food stalls and moreover it’s very cheap compared to the buffet served at the hotel restaurant. I am told it’s approx R170 per person. 1. How safe is the V&A Waterfront area ? Is it safe to walk there ? 2. I am also considering “Garden Route package tour” - The same feeling about the safety aspect come up – How safe is it ? 3.I am aware of general 10% tipping of the bill which seems to be the general practice if you visit any establishment in SA. But, what about tipping when you are at the Safari Game drives i.e How much to tip the Ranger, Tracker ? Is it per day tipping or we can tip them at the end of the safari. Can we choose to arrange the tipping (payment) on the credit card 4.Anyone did the Hot Air Ballooning in SA ? Again – Safe, Is it ? Read today’s news regarding Hot air Balloon tragedy somewhere in China which claimed lives of some dutch tourist. I am also thinking of doing the Bill Harrop’s Hot Air Ballooning near Johannesburg. I am having second thoughts after reading the recent tragedy (above). Thanks all in advance. more

Resolved Question: How do I find the acceleration?

Could anyone show me where to start on this mechanics question? A hot air balloon and its passengers have a total mass of 2000kg. The balloon is travelling horizontally at a constant velocity. The occupants release 100kg of ballast. Neglecting air resistance, find in ms^-2 the acceleration of the balloon. I'm really stuck, because I seem to have so little information. I'd really appreciate it if you could show your working! Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Physics "Hot Air Balloon" Question!!?

A hot air balloon competition requires a balloonist to drop a ribbon onto a target on the ground. Initially the hot air balloon is 50 meters above the ground and 100 meters from the target. The wind is blowing the balloon at v = 15 meters/sec on a course to travel directly over the target. The ribbon is small enough and heavy enough that the air has a negligible effect on its velocity. How long should the balloonist wait to drop the ribbon so that it will hit the target? more

Resolved Question: Travelling to Space in a Hot-Air Balloon?

I'm building my very own Hot Air Balloon and when it's complete, I'll continuously apply as much hot air as necessary till I find myself in Space. I thought I don't have the resources and the time to become a professional astronaut and join NASA, and, most importantly, why does NASA spend billions of dollars building "Discovery" shuttle and launching it into Space, when I can actually fly to Space from my very own garden in London without asking for anyone's permission? I just want to make sure it's legal and I'm not arrested by the police once I descent back to Earth. I want to go into the thermosphere (600 km. above Earth) and spend there a few hours and watch our blue planet from high above, and then come back to Earth. I know that the ascent will be very easy, as I use Hot Air Balloons all the time. It's very simple: raising the air temperature inside the envelope makes it lighter than the surrounding (ambient) air. The balloon floats because of the buoyant force exerted on it. This force is the same force that acts on objects when they are in water and is described by Archimedes' principle. So, I've calculated that by continuously going up and up, I will enter Space in about 2 hour's time. My primary concern is this: is there any law which regulates the traffic up there in Space? What if my balloon interferes with the satellites or ISS (International Space Station)? Can the authorities on Earth later on prosecute me for "reckless driving" (or "reckless flying", as the case may be) ??? Also, since my departure point is London, England, and our planet rotates, is it possible, that once I start my descend, I'll land in some entirely different country, and can I be prosecuted for this? more

Resolved Question: What is the name of this book?

When I was younger I read a book about an old man with a hot air balloon (a teacher maybe? grandfather? I don't know...) . The old man (and a few kids who came with him) would use the balloon to visit different periods in time. I know that in one of the books they traveled back to the time of the dinosaurs. The books were part of a series, with each book focused on a different time period. Any help would be appreciated. It's driving me crazy that I can't remember the name of these books! :-P more

Resolved Question: Ap physics Kinematics Homework?

I just need answer and a simple explanation for each of these problems. A motorcycle daredevil is attempting to jump across as many buses as possible (see the drawing). The takeoff ramp makes an angle θ = 16.6° above the horizontal, and the landing ramp is identical to the takeoff ramp. The buses are parked side by side, and each bus is 2.74 m wide. The cyclist leaves the ramp with a speed of v = 33.5 m/s. What is the maximum number of buses over which the cyclist can jump? horizontal rifle is fired at a bull's-eye. The muzzle speed of the bullet is 615 m/s. The barrel is pointed directly at the center of the bull's-eye, but the bullet strikes the target 0.042 m below the center. What is the horizontal distance between the end of the rifle and the bull's-eye? A soccer player kicks the ball toward a goal that is 28.6 m in front of him. The ball leaves his foot at a speed of 18.5 m/s and an angle of 31.2° above the ground. Find the speed of the ball when the goalie catches it in front of the net. (Note: The answer is not 18.5 m/s.) An airplane is flying with a velocity of v0 = 252 m/s at an angle of 30.0° with the horizontal, as the drawing shows. When the altitude of the plane is h = 2.0 km, a flare is released from the plane. The flare hits the target on the ground. What is the angle θ? You are in a hot-air balloon that, relative to the ground, has a velocity of 8.4 m/s in a direction due east. You see a hawk moving directly away from the balloon in a direction due north. The speed of the hawk relative to you is 1.2 m/s. What are the magnitude and direction of the hawk's velocity relative to the ground? Express the directional angle relative to due east. A soccer ball is kicked and launched at an angle of 15.0° above the ground. All other factors remaining the same, at what angle should the ball be launched to double the maximum height that it attains? finch rides on the back of a Galapagos tortoise, which walks at the stately pace of 0.060 m/s. After 2.0 minutes the finch tires of the tortoise's slow pace, and takes flight in the same direction for another 2.0 minutes at 12 m/s. What was the average speed of the finch for this 4 minute interval? A rocket blasts off and moves straight upward from the launch pad with constant acceleration. After 3.6 s the rocket is at a height of 75.0 m. What are the magnitude and direction of the rocket’s acceleration? What is its speed at this time? A bicyclist is finishing his repair of a flat tire when a friend rides by with a constant speed of 3.8 m/s. Two seconds later the bicyclist hops on his bike and accelerates at 2.6 m/s2 until he catches his friend. (a) How much time does it take until he catches his friend? (b) How far has he traveled in this time? (c) What is his speed when he catches up? A hot air balloon is descending at a rate of 2.6 m/s when a passenger drops a camera. (a) If the camera is 45 m above the ground when it is dropped, how long does it take for the camera to reach the ground? (b) What is its velocity just before it lands? Let upward be the positive direction for this problem. A hot air balloon has just lifted off and is rising at the constant rate of 2.0 m/s. Suddenly, one of the passengers realizes she has left her camera on the ground. A friend picks it up and tosses it straight upward with an initial speed of 10.8 m/s. If the passenger is 2.5 m above her friend when the camera is tossed, how high is she when the camera reaches her? To find the height of an overhead power line, you throw a ball straight upward. The ball passes the line on the way up after 0.75 s, and passes it again on the way down 1.7 s after it was tossed. (a) What is the height of the power line? (b) What is the initial speed of the ball? Sitting in a second-story apartment, a physicist notices a ball moving straight upward just outside her window. The ball is visible 0.25 s as it moves a distance of 1.25 m from the bottom to the top of the window. (a) How long does it take before the ball reappears? (b) What is the greatest height of the ball above the top of the window? more

Voting Question: How can i overcome my fear of flying on airplanes?

When i was 7 years old my parents died in a tragic hot air balloon accident...they went away on vacation to california flying on a plane and they never came back. I had always loved flying on planes and even though the plane was not what killed them years later i had developed a fear of flying and airports. I am 17 years old and about 3 or 4 years ago out of nowhere i went to the airport to go on vacation and on the car ride there i got mad stomach pain. I started throwing up in the airport and was terribly ill. I was put on a medication called prevacid which is supposed to reduce acid in your stomach. I would get nervous and produce an excess amount of stomach acid and it would cause me tremendous pain and anxiety. I have not flewn in a few years and did not realize it could be tied to nerves about my paretns death and just traveling and also 9/11 didnt help my fear...i am not nervous now and am older hoping that i can handle it. I am flying today and will be flying 3 more times in the next 2 weeks. I just got a new prescription for the medicine but it is all mental that is just there to help me if i need it for my stomach. Does anyone have any ideas to what i can think or do to calm my self when if i start to get nervous in the airport it would be very very much appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Questions about trigonometric.Really need help?

A hot-air balloon is floating above a straight road. To estimate their height above the ground, the balloonists simultaneously measure the angle of depression to two consecutive mileposts on the road on the same side of the balloon. The angles of depression are found to be 17° and 19°. How high is the balloon? Resolved Question: urgent help needed. Art project on theme travel?

Art project help on travel and transport? My current art project theme given is that of travel and transport. 1.) For my first part of the project I am asked to produce a sketchbook of research (historical and contemporary), ideas drawings and photographs. As simple as the title sounds I am a little stuck for ideas, as to me simply drawing transport like cars, trolleys, balloons seems a bit dull and boring especially for a female also. As an artist I keep trying to look for deeper things with this project so any ideas as to where I can go I would be very grateful of. Ive started with a travel mindmap and will then probably look at forms but where next.. 2.) For the second part I have to produce 4 imaginative totally impractically visual alternatives to the modes of travel I used during the summer.. The modes of travel I have used are aeroplane, bus, car, canal boat and hot air balloon... I can use anu media to communicate my ideas 3) I have to produce/ make an extra ordinary pencil transporter again my chosen type of travel used in my holidays has to be considered for the design so balloon, aeroplane, canal boat the transported is not intened to be practical or functional but creatively assembled and look good. Help would be much appreciated to get me going with ideas, as Ive had a total mental block. more
