I have been clogging the Italy forum for weeks now and for that, I sincerely apologize. I am very torn between studying abroad in Rome and Florence, Italy. I have two huge concerns: 1) Cost - both programs are approximately $15,000 ... i have about $6,000 in financial aid. Banks allow you to take out an educational loan for the amount up to the total cost of the program. So my thought process is 15k - 6k= 9k (so the program will really only be costing me 9k because of financial aid) but, i can continue to borrow 15k so I have 5/6k for living expenses, meals etc. - I need to know which city is more expensive in terms of living expenses! Since this is not a vacation (I will be living there for approximately 5 months) I don't think I will feel the need to splurge on one huge night out because I will have opportunities to go out all of the time. But I do need to know which city has more expensive food, night life, attractions, etc. 2) Travel opportunities - This means so much to me I would almost set this above cost. I was thinking of purchasing the Eurail Global Pass (the 3 month one) and traveling throughout Europe on the weekends. Now, most destinations I would want to reach (Ireland, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona) are about a day's worth of travel away from Rome and Florence. So I was wondering if I could get any opinions on the Eurail pass vs. cheap airlines like Ryan Air and Easyjet Overall ... which city will allow me to have a better experience based on these two factors? ps- is the 3 month eurail pass worth if for me living there for 4/5 months (i will probably only be able to travel on weekends) more

I hope to study abroad in Rome from January 2011-May/June 2011 ... My parents are paying for tuition, room/board, and necessary expenses such as food. I want to save up a substantial amount of spending money in order to save my parents some trouble. Of course I plan on traveling on the weekends and during breaks ... I was wondering how much spending money I should save in order to afford to visit these countries/cities: Naples, Milan, Sicily, Venice, Florence (within Itay) Germany (Berlin & Munich) Ireland (Dublin) England (London) Czech Republic (Prague) Switzerland (Genova) Vatican City Greece France (Paris, Cannes, Nice) Spain (Madrid, Barcelona) Monaco (Monte Carlo) & hopefully some of eastern europe as well. My friend is stuck in Barcelona, Spain, due to the bad weather caused by the erupting volcano in Iceland. Air travel is currently prohibited and apparently the Spanish trains are on strike. She has friends staying in Lagos, Portugal, and as it is very difficult to get to Ireland, she would like to make it there at least. Can she take a ferry/bus/train to Lagos or Lisbon?? Im going to Europe in July, I fly to london, then I want to see Paris (Maybe barcelona), Florence, Rome, Venice, Munich/Berlin, Amsterdam then back to London. I have so far seen these options: Contiki, Top-deck, Busabout, Ryan air (and fly everywhere), Eurail. What is the best option? Pros and Cons? Im on a small budget and will be staying at backpackers, will I have to prebook accommodation as ill be there in peek season? Your help would be greatly appreciated!!! We will be in Spain for eleven days in February, and have already booked roundtrip flights to/from Barcelona. We want to see at least one other city while we are there. We are leaning towards Seville, Madrid, or something in the Canary Islands (which would have to be done by plane, of course). We are noticing that Rail Europe tickets are very expensive. That leaves planes, of which we are leaning towards Spanair. There is also Ryan Air, which is cheapest, but so horribly reviewed that I have to think it is mostly a scam. Many people have had their reservations "lost," and many others have had their flights severely delayed. Ugh. Is Spanair best, or do you have another recommendation? Is there a ground transportation option that is better/cheaper than Rail Europe? more

I'm arriving on an Air France flight (from Toronto to Paris) at 06:15. I'll be travelling with two children (16 and 13), and I'll have 2 pieces of checked baggage to pick up. My next flight (to Barcelona) is on the same day at 08:25. It's with Vueling airlines, which is located in Terminal 1 (but Air France parks at Terminal 2F). Vueling also requires passengers to check in at least 30 mins prior to takeoff. Would it be possible for me to make it, or would it be a tight squeeze between these two flights? Thanks. more

I'd realy like people's opinions on this, it also needs to be shortened by about 50 words but i don't know which bits to shorten. . The study of Geography has intrigued me for many years, but it is recently that I have come to realise the importance of it in everyday life. My upbringing and regular travels in Bulgaria was the initial spark for my geographical interest, as from an early age I have been curious by the contrasting lifestyles between the U.K, which is many years ahead in terms of development, compared to the poor regions of Eastern Europe, in transition from reliance on agriculture and dirty heavy industry. Bulgaria’s recent joining of the E.U. should bring it political and economic stability, but inevitably will also cause a clash between attitudes of the past the past and present, in a place where culture and tradition from hundreds of years is still going strong and plays an important role in the family unit. Through my early experiences living in a country with immensely beautiful locations undisrupted by human activity, I have learnt that the planet is a big, closed system; disrupting the balance could have devastating effects to the whole cycle. “A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Franklin Roosevelt Coming from an ethnic minority, I have had to overcome language barriers, social and cultural differences but I have used it to my advantage; I have a flexible mind and can adapt quickly to new situations. I am fluent in Bulgarian and semi-fluent in Spanish .I recently embarked on a school trip to Barcelona, in order to complete a survey, I had to use my vocabulary in Spanish to communicate with the local people, my ability to do this was important in the process of gathering required information, and my input benefited the whole group. The city of Barcelona presented a fascinating case study of urban growth and development; I especially took interest in the urban renewal schemes of El Raval, which was until recently one of the most densely populated urban areas in the world. For the coursework however, I chose the River Ribes in which I investigated into the flood risk of two different sites along the river, and the effect of it on people’s lives. This involved collecting data of the width and depth of the channel among other things, studying the data and using my mathematical knowledge to aid me in the use of different formulas, in order to find out certain characteristics of the channel such as the channel gradient. My self-motivation, strong self-drive, and enthusiasm in the task allowed me to be one of few with 100% mark on my coursework. Reading fictional books has always been a favourite pastime of mine, and is important to me as it allows me to activate my imagination to it’s full extent as I participate in the mental task of following, understanding and predicting the plot of each unique composition. Thus I picked English literature as one of my A-levels, enabling me to appreciate the differences in styles of writing and author’s techniques that I have found very influential in other aspects of my life. English literature has helped me practice my use of imaginative ideas, and analytical skills when studying any text whether fictional or non-fictional. I am also able to confidently and easily put my ideas to paper and have been told I have a unique and engaging writing style, interlinking new and original ideas effectively. I greatly enjoy challenges and the satisfaction they inevitably bring, for this reason I also chose maths. Though it being one of the more difficult A-level subjects, it suited me well and taught me many new and advanced mathematical ideas which also aided me in better understanding of statistics in geography. My openness to new experiences is clear by the number of hobbies I have obtained in the past and have continued whenever possible; windsurfing, rock-climbing, skiing, hiking, camping, tombstoning, snowboarding, and playing the violin, keyboard and the guitar. In 2004 I participated in work experience as a veterinary assistant, it was challenging at times but it allowed me understand the importance of commitment together with consistency, to achieve success in any area of life. I have a wide range of interests but I am passionate about Geography, as it is a main part of my life and is consistent in everything we do. On the 4th of december i was supposed to leave Barcelona to go to Argentina to spend christmas and new year with my girlfriend and her family,after a 20 hr delay i finaly left but lost my connecting flight to Cordoba,bought another flight , 16th dec Air Madrid go down and i had to buy another flight back to Spain (1000euros). I payed by visa and took out travel insurence with Rumbo the company that i bought the ticket with i can't get any sense from any of them , do i have any rights , i've had to borrow money from the bank and we are still looking for a ticket to get my girlfriend back to Spain , if anyone has the same problem or any advice i would be happy to hear from them more
